Casino worker and Non sacramental couple

I am 53 y.o., baptized catholic, but for some reason I never went through my first communion. So I now follow a Catholic Education group in my church, in order to get prepared.

However the priest told me that I won’t be able to have my first communion as long as my marriage is not consecrated - my wife and myself had a civil marriage 15 years ago and, basically, we live in sin…

I accept that, and I hope that my wife will accept renewed wows in a church ceremony.

But I wonder… That same education group is also attended by a young single woman, who works at the casino at the gaming tables. Isn’t she sinning as much as I do in my non sacramental marriage? Last Sunday, she came to Mass after having worked all night at the casino. Should she not be demanded to leave her job in order to go through all the sacraments?

And what sin has she committed by working at a casino? Gambling is not evil in and of itself.
 
I did not realise that. I thought that gambling was a sin. Obviously, I still have lots to learn 🙂
 
I don’t understand why you think she should have to leave her job.

Since I thought gambling is a sin, and she was willingly living in sin as I do in my non consecrated marriage. But happy to accept that gambling, and working for it, is not a sin. 🙂
 
Stay the course Popof ~ your marriage will be so much more enriched once you receive the sacrament. Don’t give up.

point number one
it is a mistake to compare one’s own situation with that of others because you cannot know the whole story. This is especially true of those in RCIA or Confirmation programs.

there is no inherent sin in working in a casino

the point of getting your marriage is convalidated is just that, so you will be living in a valid marriage in communion with the Church. Until you return to that condition, through rectifying the marriage situation and sacramental confession and absolution of any sin that may have resulted from it, you cannot ask for other sacraments of the Church (I am using “you” in the editorial sense, to apply to anyone in a similar situation, not at a particular person).

There is no reason for anyone in the confirmation class to assume you, or anyone else, is in a state of sin. That is for the priest to determine in the context of confession.

Talk to your priest about convalidation or radical sanation. You should be able to rectify this issue fairly easily provided there are no other impediments such as prior marriages for either of you.

No. The church does not teach that gambling in general is a sin nor working in a casino.

Thank you. That’s very helpful, since my wife’s faith is not quite the same as mine, and she is not keen on a “second” marriage.

Just for the record, gambling can become a serious sin if the person who is gambling willingly risks losing a lot of money that he or she should be using to pay bills they owe, or to support and feed their family.

When a person gambles modestly for entertainment, like playing cards for a few dollars, that is not a sin, just recreation.

It seems like you could have a convalidation. To your wife, it should just be like a renewal of vows… it’s just a small ceremony.
 
Ha! Back in the day, the Assoc Pastor at my parish taught me how to play roulette.
