As I thumb through my FSSP application (I can only apply for next year now), and as I read it, many practicalities came into my head that never entered it before. One that I’ve been wondering about is the cassock.

Seminarians begin wearing them in Second Year, and must buy there own. They don’t recommend any particular place.

Anyone recommend any particular place to buy one? What about shirts, and collars? Is it “in the vogue” to wear pants underneath them? I always thought this was kind of ugly, but handy if it’s really windy out.

I would hope you do wear pants underneath your cassock. It is not a kilt, and you shouldn’t lead others into an occasion of sin 🙂

If it is windy you can velcro the hem to your socks. If it is cold you could wear a couple of pairs of sweat pants. If it is hot you could have a battery powered fan under there with all the room, maybe even an astronaut mini ac.

I am sure the seminary can direct you to a good vendor once you get there. I know there is at least one good tailor up in NYC but I don’t recall his business’ name.

Mat, you can check out Gaspardinc.com. They have a great selection of cassocks and whatever else you need. They have several stores and I believe they can ship their products as well.

There is a great place in Chicago The House of Hansen and they custom tailor cassocks and vestments. They send you an easy self measurment form and will sew your cassock to fit you. I have ordered one via mail for a friend and it fit him to a tea. They are quality and lightweight wool and his has lasted for five years of study in Rome. AND and I am told the Polish women pray for the seminarian or clergy for whom they are sewing for.

Growing up in Rome we knew how to spot seminarians from the USA. They were the only one that used to wear pants under their cassocks. 😃

I used to act as an MC as I was discerning my vocation, and my pastor allowed me to wear a cassock. I would MC all the Masses, and I would generally wear a pair of gym shorts underneath. My pastor, who is British, generally does the same thing when wearing his cassock (which is about half the time).

True. Wearing pants underneath (unless it’s cold) pre-supposes that cassocks are not the “normal clothes”, but something worn in addition to the normal clothes.
