this weekend i came across a religious procession in my neighborhood. it turned out to have been arranged by a neighboring parish to mine in order to distribute flyers about a catechesis program for adults and children. i was invited to attend by the people distributing the flyer.

catechesis is defined on the web as “oral instruction for catechumens”. now i’m definitely not a catechumen, having been catholic my whole life. but i could certainly benefit from studying the catechism of the church. so i’m wondering: in the opinion of the posters here, is catechesis for catholic children and adult would-be converts only, or is it for adult catholics who want to better understand their faith as well?

I think it’s for anyone who wants to learn more about the faith.

A catechumen is someone preparing for Baptism.

But catechesis is for all of us. The word means “resounding” or “echoing down” and refers to passing on the truths of our faith.

I am attending RCIA = Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults

Held by the Catholic Church since I believe 1990’s

I am a cradle Catholic and I am trying to learn more about our Faith.

RCIA is for anyone who wants to learn what the Catholic Church teaches.

We just had our 5th class (meets once a week) people seem to “pop” in or out depending on their schedule. I have attended all 5 classes so far. I tell people to “pop” in and check it out!

The Priest gives a homily every Sunday I am sure he knows the laity are not technically catechumens. Go and have some fun, you will be amazed at what you will learn

Well traditionally Catechesis is the “Echoing of the Faith” Or an Oral presentation of the Catholic Faith to anyone. It was originally to the Catechumens, those seeking Baptism as Christians. It was of course thought that those already Baptized knew their faith, which today is sadly not the case. So in Years past the Bishops have called for in 1999 published a new document calling for an emphasis on Adult Catechesis in parishes.
