I heard a commentator on EWTN yesterday evening feeling completely betrayed by the Secretary of Heath and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius. Although a baptized Catholic, Sebelius is promoting HHS policies that many find decidedly anti-Catholic.

The point of this thread is not to pass judgement on Dr. Sebelius or anyone else, but to use her case as an example. I’d like to make a proposal and hear your thoughts on it.

I propose that Dr. Sebelius and others like her who oppose and fight against Church teaching on right to life issues were given more convincing arguments from non-Catholic sources than from Catholic sources during formative times in their lives, and a large share of the blame for their promotion of the culture of death is on faithful Catholics who make poor judgements about how to catechize people in the scientific community.

If you agree with my proposal, what can we do about it? I’ll save everyone some time and say that we start by praying about it. Now what ELSE do we do?

Dr. Sebelius’s bishop needs to find the courage to excommunicate her. Publicly. and explain why.

Thank you for this thread, and I agree completely and very strongly that the Church bears a larger burden of blame in the West - including here in the US - for the current pervasive infidelity to Catholic Truth.

I am reluctant to recount my own history and frustrations of offering to work in the much-needed area of catechesis (adult catechesis in particular). I’ve learned to hope for at best, a toleration of and a lack of active opposition to the work by the authorities. I sadly have not found what I have sought - a priest or bishop who wants to evangelize and catechize, whom I could help in the apostolate.

What we can do is

1. get qualified/educated/certified, with a degree from a solid Catholic school;
2. be prepared for a “tent-making” ministry as Paul had to do at times - be prepared to support yourself in the world, but work for the Lord teaching among His people on your own time, as a volunteer.
3. If you can find Church employment, be prepared for another and a different battle than you might expect, with an entrenched bureaucracy having its own priorities and aims.
4. Pray and watch for sincere helpers. There are some, everywhere, because God is working.

you and I have no idea how Sibelius, Pelosi or other renegade Catholics were catechized so we have no basis for making a judgement. It is also possible that they received ample orthodox Catholic teaching in their formative years and have now chosen to go for the brass ring and discard that teaching.
