Catechism poll.....

I just finished reading the Catechism front to back. Took about a year, on and off, but it was well worth it. I feel as if my faith has gone from infancy to adolescence (still got a long way to go, to be sure) as I have read. This should be required reading for confirmation and RCIA classes. I don’t understand why so many Catholics shun this document. I bet none of those types have even taken the time to read it.

What are your thoughts on your favorite sections?
 
I never thought about having favorite parts of it.
Think more of it as a reference book.
So, you could say my favorite part is what I’m looking up
or studying at the time.
 
The Catechism is certainly very helpful to me when I need to find out something very specific, but I have not tried reading it from cover to cover in order. I had to vote the option that I have not read it through, but I think all parts of it are equally helpful to me at different times.

I also consider it more of a reference book. In my opinion, though, if there is one section that should be read straight through, it is Section IV on Christian Prayer. Anyone who wants to enrich their prayer life should study that section!

I had thought of it like that, until I read it. In the book are the answers to our faith. I found it amazing how often in my discussions with Protestant co-workers we’d come upon a topic I had just read the night before. Had I not read it, I would not have been able to provide a good answer.

Trust me, read the Catechism through and through, you’ll be happy you did.
 
But I think the most beneficial to my faith were parts I and III: The Creed and Life in Christ. Both were amazingly thorough and taught me more about my faith than about 10 years of feel-good Sunday school. 😦 If you read any part of the Catechism, read parts I and III. 👍 Part I is especially interesting when it goes into the church’s teachings on eschatology.
 
The current Catechism doesn’t read like a reference book. I couldn’t pick my favorite part. . . I love them all!
 
I like all of the Catechism…I can find guidance on any matter of faith…it is a great tool also when showing Non-Catholics what we believe in…in addition to the Nicene Creed.

The information is important in the CCC, but really, it is the attitude with which it is presented that is helpful.

It is also useful if someone says, “Oh no, you Catholics don’t believe that.” I can then easily say, yes we do, instead of them having to rely on my word alone, I produce the CCC.

ARRRG, I hate its index though. It needs a better one if it is supposed to work as a reference. Well, maybe it is me who is defective, but either way, I need a better index on it. I love the way it has the index of scripture in the back (the pocket edition doesn’t have this).
 
I didn’t vote because there was no option for all of the above. I’ve read it cover to cover twice! It really is a good read. By the way, you can go to www.hismercy.ca and download a catechism program, if anyone is interested.

I purposely didn’t make that an option. Sorry bout that, but I knew if I did, that one would easily vote down the others, and I wanted to see which section seems to have had the most impact on people who’ve read it. But yes, I agree, it is a good read.

I use the Catechism and Bible on the Vatican Web site…

I feel exactly the same way you do! I understand so much more about Catholicism after reading the Catechism. I read it front to back in 4 months though. I decided to put aside all other reading, etc. so that I could get through it faster. I don’t think I could have kept at it for a year! Congrats!!! I think the part that was most beneficial to me was the part regarding the social teachings of the Church…chastity, caring for the poor, etc. Not sure which section that was in though…

Being one of those polls where you can select more than one option, you could just check all the sections for a virtual “all the above”.

That part is the part I enjoyed the most, as well. (Well, tied with part I).

Chastity is in Life in Christ (Part III) in the 6th Commandment, as are caring for the poor, etc., which are covered in the other commandments.

I gotta say, the Ten Commandments section was MUCH more interesting than I thought it was going to be. No doubt, it’s going to profoundly affect the way I approach Confession. The section was so good, I was literally disappointed when I finished it because I wanted MORE!!! 🙂
