Cathlolic salvation?

doing research for a school project, and found the following statment on beliefnet.com. Is there anyone who can explain this concept to me.(note, it goes on longer, this is just what i was confused about)

***Salvation
*All are already saved (through Christ’s death and resurrection), are still being saved (through the Church), and will be saved in the future (second coming of Christ).

All are already saved? as in we all go to heaven? still being saved? will be saved? doesn’t make sense.

Dear Egg,

You’re right, the statement makes no sense. It would be more correct to say that the death and resurrection of Jesus redeemed us all. Salvation, however, is not accomplished until we die. St. Paul, writing to the Philipians, tells them to “work out your salvation in fear and trembling” (2:12). This does not mean that we save ourselved, but that we strive for salvation. This is why St. Paul also uses the image of a race – we must continue to work for salvation until the very end of the race. He was concerned, even, that he might be rejected (cf 1 Cor 9:27).

For a Catholic the correct answer to “are you saved?” is “I am being saved.” St. Paul tells us that the Body of Christ is “being saved” (cf 1 Cor 1:18, 1 Cor 15:2 and 2 Cor 2:15).

“Are you saved?” asks the Fundamentalist. The Catholic should reply: “As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15). Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13).”

Personally, I thought the way this response was formulated in Catholicism and Fundamentalism was better. It stated (paraphrasing) “I am redeemed and like the Apostle Paul, I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling; not with a false assurance, but with hopeful confidence.”
