Catholic Answers the TV show? Would you watch it? Of course you would, but what should the format be?
(nods to KTM who posted this idea first)

How about a variety show? Jerry and Karl could do a song and dance routine. Anybody know if Jimmy can do any card tricks? Maybe a bit of stand up from Rosalind?
:rotfl:
Ok maybe not. 😃

I think it’s a good idea. I would say to use a varied approach much as it is on the radio show. Until there are more Catholic radio stations you’re at a saturation point there. This forum is terrific for the web crowd. Television brings in new cost factors that raise questions about how efficient a medium it is but there are lots of people who can watch EWTN on TV who can’t get the radio show.

I think a quiz show on ETWN would be great. This type of program would be a delightful ‘break’ from the talking heads format on EWTN. Then EWTN could also feature prizes from their Religious Catalogue. (The Religiwous Catalogue show is pretty lame 😦 )

A Soap Opera for Karl? What a concept! Just think, "Days of our Apologetists’, ‘All God’s Children’, ‘One Life to Save’, and the unforgetable ‘As Karl’s World Turns’!

Go with God!

I voted other…

I do not think there should be a Catholic Answers TV show…

EWTN has this area pretty much covered.

Catholic Answers does radio pretty well… The cost of a TV production would be great and I do not think it would be worth the cost…

Keep up the radio and print media… Leave TV to EWTN.

Edwin and others,

This is an interesting idea, one that we’ve talked about internally for some time. Obviously, we haven’t made the leap into TV yet.

Lots of reasons why not, some of which have been listed here - perhaps chiefly the cost factor. People ask us all the time if we have thought about doing TV. I guess they feel our apologetics resources (i.e. people) could also be utilized via that medium.

At any rate, I really loved your suggestions, Edwin, about the soap opera ideas. I’ll make sure Karl gets a glimpse of them!

God bless you all!

I noticed that no votes had been cast to “travel with Jerry around the country during Share-a-Thon months.” You mean, no one wants to help me raise money for the local Catholic radio stations? 🙂

I’m with you, Jerry.

Maybe the quiz show could be “Who wants to be an Apologist” on TV. You know, lay people trying to win and stuff.

But, I’ll help you fund raise, Jerry.

I think a you doing a Catholic Travel Show would be great. You would visit a Catholic Parish each week, raise money and share the rich stories of that Parish. Need anyone to carry your bags!

I think it should be a Cage-Match show. Put James White and Jimmy Akin in a cage (WWF style) and whoever comes out alive, obviously God was with them and has the fullness of the truth.😃

More life Fulton Sheen’s Life is Worth Living with a call-in Q&A at the end of it.

Great idea. I’d like to see something along the lines of Journey Home or Life on the Rock. Guests, Interviews, and call-in questions for the “Apologist of the Day”.

I chose the quiz show format. We could get Catholic sponsorship and have cash prizes donated to Catholic charities that could be the featured charity of the week!!

Karl, what do you think? Are you and Jerry up for it?

Jerry may be, but I’m not. TV and I don’t mix. (I have a tough enough time being on radio.)

The variety of apologists you have on the radio is awesome and contributes to the show’s success. The radio format works so well for call-ins that I don’t think putting it on TV would really add anything – and it might even detract 😉 (For example, I love Marcus Grodi’s “Journey Home” show, but it’s just as good on the radio as it is on TV.)

If you went on TV, I’d like to see something that requires that media. I voted for a quiz show because I think it would be fun and interesting, but the dramatic re-enactment of dicey apologetic situations is intriguing – so many possibilities.

I’ve got it: WRESTLING WITH SCRIPTURE!

See, you’re thinking about existing audiences, and yes, that’s all covered.

We’ve got to pull in the people who would NEVER tune into EWTN or Catholic Answers to listen to an erudite discussion of typology or to watch James White and Karl Keating flip Bible pages and sling verses.

People who channel surf want action! They want excitement! They want to see James White bop Scott Hahn on the head with a huge, coffee-table Bible, and then Hahn bounce White off the ropes and get him in a headlock until he hollers 'POPE!"

The prize, of course, would be the coveted ‘Bible Belt.’

Jerry Usher travelling around raising funds for Catholic Radio…yeah, that’s OK.

But give him a souped-up, amphibious Pope-mobile and the real adventure begins! Jerry travels the back roads of America, going from town to town as the peace-loving proponent of Catholic radio, but somehow, wherever he appears, there’s trouble, and only he can rescue the beleagured citizens of Maryville - by rescuing their local Catholic radio station from the forces of evil and economics.

Or how about a sit-com? Behind the scenes at KIRI, your local Catholic TV station? Starring Rosalind Moss as the host of ‘Heavenly Homemakers,’ a program of cooking and wisdom; Jerry Usher, the station announcer, a beefy weight-lifter whose real voice is high and squeaky, making for all kinds of amusing situations; Karl Keating, the benevolent station manager; Jimmy Akins, who does a kiddie show called ‘Bronco Bob’s Bible Rodeo’; and various guests, such as the child-rearing expert Roy Generic, whose policy on spanking ensures regular pickets of the station reception area.

Quiz shows…how about ‘Family Feud,’ apologetics-style? The families could compete for a semester’s tuition at a Catholic university.

Or ‘Moral Jeopardy,’ with questions about moral choices increasing in difficulty until you reach ‘Final Jeopardy,’ where your soul is truly in danger if you make the wrong moral choice.

How about a reality show in which several people compete to convince the audience that they are an authentic Catholic? They are put in various situations ranging from easy (Do they genuflect in a Protestant church?) to more complex (Do they know how to prepare for the visit of a priest to someone who is dying at home?). They are presented with surprise situations (a Cardinal walks in) and they have to behave appropriately (Do they greet him with, ‘Good to see you, your Cardship’?). The audience gets to vote to ‘ex-communicate’ the people they think are not really Catholic. At the end of several episodes, the real Catholic is revealed, and if s/he is the last survivor, s/he wins an audience with the pope.

If you’re gonna do TV - ya gotta do TV!

That TRULY got me rollin’!
I do not know how anyone could pass those ideas up!
Really like the Sit-com, sounds more bizarre than WKRP in Cincinnati!

Go with God!

P.S. You should personally e mail that to Karl!

Hi whatadeecee,

When you say you’ll help me raise funds, the only response that comes to mind are the words of Jesus in Matthew chapter 20, when the mother of the sons of Zebedee asked him to allow her two sons to sit at his right and left hand in his kingdom - “You do not know what you are asking.” :bigyikes:

God bless!

Hi Mom26SoFar,

Nice idea…thanks for sharing it! I don’t know how Karl would feel about it, but I’m all for it 👍

God bless.
