Hello all,

One of my favorite things in the world is classic art. I studied Spanish art while studying abroad. It was long before I was Catholic, but I learned so much about the faith from those painting that I still pronounce Annunciation, “Anunciacion.”

Anyway, I’m looking for some great Catholic art books. Hopefully ones that are large with lots of paintings in color and perhaps some writing. I already have one book from El Museo del Prado in Madrid, and I would love to have some with other types of art. Most especially, I’d like to find one with Asian Catholic art. I saw a picture of an Asian Madonna once, and it was so beautiful!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please also feel free to share stories about Catholic artwork!

A few months ago I came across “Saints: A Visual Guide”, by Edward and Lorna Mornin. It’s a pocket-sized paperback, about 250 pages of saints with short descriptions (brief life, sometimes a bit of poetry, patronage, symbols used for the saint in art) and a piece of art for each one, all in color and on nice paper. Some of the art is recent but none of it is super modern. Although the back is a little irreverent ("This book will be an invaluable field guide for everyone, even the most seasoned “saint spotter”) and they claim that St. Michael is not a “real person” it is not overwhelming (I just cross out lines like those) and the Saints are indexed in the back and all the art is attributed. If you love the Saints it’s worth a look. The beautiful reproduction of a really brightly colored Annunciation of Fra Angelico’s on the cover is by itself enough to make me happy to own it. 😃
