I found this one group (though you can imagine my surprise!) while searching for “Catholic art”.

They are pushing to restore the true notion of beauty in art and entertainment. They don’t have a lot on their website yet, but the idea looks promising. I was thinking someone needs to do that – to give Hollywood a run for their money

I wonder where they go to Mass?

Interesting site, Matt. As a journalist, I might get involved. The quality of writing and other forms of communication and the arts have gone downhill so much. I hope they have some success in the mission.

It’s interesting this was brought up. I was working in another office at the paper I work for and heard some people there speaking about music. They were bothered, annoyed, indignant about the idea that Wal-Mart requires some music “artists” to clean up their lyrics on songs and rerecording them if they want them sold at Wal-Mart. This was something I was not aware of. Kudos to Wal-Mart. But those who were discussing it felt that how could Wal-Mart do something like that in violation of “freedom of expression?” They talked about how inconvenient it is for music buyers to have to go to another store to pick up the original CD with all the vulgarity intact. I thought, “Have we completely lost it?” Obviously, the music artist can say no to Wal-Mart request, but he is also aware that there could be a considerable loss of revenue if the CD isn’t sold at the world’s largest retailer. And is anyone really deprived if they hear versions of songs without four-letter words?

Yes, we need some balancing act in the arts, and hopefully the Catholic Institute of Arts and Letters will help provide some kind of positive influence.

David Lynch and Lars von Trier have already accomplished, and are still accomplishing, what the art institute is setting out to do. It is useless. The battle has been fought and won. They need only see and believe…

I visited the website and I think they have a wonderful goal, but the website doesn’t have a lot of content and they don’t seem to lay out how they plan some of its goals (like the library’s preservation goals). Does anyone know who this group is or have any further information about them?
