Hello,

I am currently enrolled in RCIA, which is going really well.

However, due to my previous involvement in a Fundementalist church and then Church of England, much of the resources I have at home are based upon a Protestant interpretation.

Can anyone recommend a good Catholic Bible study resource and indeed a Catholic Bible?

I’ve looked around on the internet but to be honest have become a bit bogged down with all the choices.

My personal choices…

The Douay Rheims with the Haydock commentary (nice BIG hardcover issue for as low at $90 + S/H)
or
The Navarre Bible Commentary (available in both hardcover and soft… the 12 individual books for the NT have the most commentary, at about $16 each)
Both have excellant commentary which seem to have become the standard for other studies that are currently being offered,
 
good resources when you can afford them, but your first study bible for RCIA should be the New American Bible because it is the one used in the lectionary, and for this period the lectionary readings will be the basis of your study and your RCIA formation. If you want to invest in a good hard cover study bible that will last for years, the Catholic Study Bible NAB Oxford edition is a good infestment at under $40, from most Catholic book catalogs, including Our Sunday Visitor.

Your next purchase should be the RSV-CE, from Ignatius press as the language sounds more “biblical” and lest straight-forward conversational like the NAB, and will “sound” more familiar to you.

If you want to start building a library of studies on individual books, begin with the Ignatius press study editions by Scott Hahn. In fact any of his books on various aspect of Catholic doctrine are excellent because of his Evangelical background and ability to understand and explain some of the question you may have if your prior study has been in the similar tradition. This is now available I believe in a complete NT, as is the Navarre (the gold standard, but pricey).

There is a concordance to the NAB available, and the Dictionary of Biblical Theology, from wordamongus.com is a good first reference book to have. the same source has a monthly devotional with the daily Mass readings, daily devotional commentary on the readings, order of the Mass, and other articles relevant to the season. I recommend this as your first devotional. they also sell very good topical bible studies for use alone or in a group.

More bible studies are available from Emaus Road, through the Catholics united for the Faith website, cuf.org. For anyone who feels their RCIA doctrinal instruction is basic and wants to go further, the high school religion textbooks from Midwest Theological Forum (same site) especially intro to Catholocism and the Scripture course are excellent, in fact, the scripture text should be a basic in an Catholic bible study library. Ascension press is also a good source for reliable bible studies and resources.
 
i use the Catholic Study Bible NAB Oxford edition for study and love it. half of the book is study guides, notes, and intros to each book of the bible. it also contains a complete liturgical calendar with daily mass readings.

find a comparable study bible which is the translation approved for lectionary use in your country, which I believe is either the Jerusalem bible or RSV-CE (I think there is an Oxford study edition as well, somebody will jump in here soon)

there are a couple of extensive threads debating recent revisions of the RSV with contributors far more knowledgeable about its history, might be worth a look.

Which bible translation did you grow up with? Look for the Catholic translation that is closest in “flavor”. For instance if you love the King James version, look at the Douay-Rheims Challoner with the Haydock commentary referenced in the first answer above. You should be able to find both around $100 on amazon.

Do you like the New English Bible? then the NAB will be more congenial to you, and should be available anywhere you buy Catholic books on-line.

what version is used in your RCIA class? ask the priest or deacon if it comes in a study edition.

Or try Amazon.com or even Ebay.

I prefer the RSV, Catholic edition.
 
I just want to thank you, EDKidd, for your question to the forum and for all the answers that various members posted to you!

In searching for Catholic Bible studies online, I never had much luck and am so happy that in surfing the Scripture forum here I have come across all the wonderful links which people have sent in. I have bookmarked several of them and now have more resources than my own few books to consult when I come across a Bible passage that puzzles me.

Although you posted your inquiry many months ago, I don’t want to neglect to say thanks to all, and most especially to the Holy Spirit, who has led me to this information.

If you are in the UK them:
Many Church of England commentary will do. I have taked online with CofE seminarians in the USA, Episcopalians and they use the New Jerome Biblical commentary for example. And is used too in Catholic seminaries, at least in my country.The New Jerusalem Bible used in the UK has some study editions with excellent notes. I heard that there is a new Study edition based in the old 1966 Jerusalem Bible in the UK. The Opus Dei has the excellent Navarre Study Bible and the Didache series, one is a Bible study by Scott Hann called Undertanding Scripture that I’m buying soon with the Navarre set for a future.
 
Go to the Sacred Scripture and click on the Bibla Clerus link and download it. It’s completely free and it has the catachism, the complete RSV Catholic Bible, and writings by the saints on the Bible! Just remember to pick English! 👍
