Catholic Biblical Fiction?

Hello. Does anyone know of any Catholic fiction based on the Bible, set during New Testament or early Church times? I know there are a wide range of Protestant stories based on or concurrent with biblical stories, but I would like to know if any Catholics write similar stories. I’m particularly interested in fiction based on the early Church, from the time of Acts forward.

One of the best-known of all historical novels of the kind you describe is Quo Vadis, first published in 1896. The author, Henryk Sienkiewicz, was a Polish Catholic, but I don’t think it has ever been regarded as a specifically Catholic novel.

Do you have access to Formed.org through your parish?

They have some good fiction, “Awakening” is a novel about a young woman who wakes up in Jerusalem during the days Christ died.
 
A first-rate historical novel – one of the best I’ve ever read, and the historical novel is a genre I particularly enjoy – is Helena by Evelyn Waugh. In addition, it is an explicitly Catholic novel. However, it’s set in a period that is quite a bit later than the one you specify in your OP. It is a fictionalized biography of St. Helena, Constantine’s mother, with her discovery of the True Cross as the climax of the storyline. It is also very short, barely 150 pages in the old Penguin edition. Waugh is on record as saying that of all his many novels, this is the one he personally liked best.

TheLittleLady, yes my parish does have formed.org but I didn’t know it also had fiction, I’ll have to look into it. Thanks!
 
It’s already been mentioned but Quo Vadis. Amazing book. I finished it earlier this year and I still find myself thinking about it.
 
Have you seen the movie entitled, “Full Of Grace”? Maybe not so much “fiction” but it is kinda speculative. I watched it on YouTube. Beautiful film about the Mother of our Lord.
 
Had to log in to say I love The Robe! It was made into a movie; I have fond memories of watching it during Holy Week with my parents when I was young. 🙂
 
My mind works a little differently.

First one I thought of was not a movie but a book. “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alleghieri

Spoiler alert.

Our hero and humble narrator gets lost, stumbles into an opening in the ground that is the entrance to the underworld. The Roman poet Virgil, an honorable “pagan” of yore … becomes Dante’s guide through hell (the Inferno), and Purgatorio before turning him over to a godly woman who continues his journey by showing him some of the delights of heaven … then returning him to his old life.
