Hi experts! I’m hoping you all can help me.

My dad went thru RCIA 40+ years ago when he was in his 20’s so he could marry my mom, a devout Catholic. He has never really “gotten” the faith or made any attempt to practice any sort of faith. I recently reverted back to Catholicism after being away 20+ years. Between my reversion and him aging it sounds like he has begun to open himself up to exploring the question of God.

I am hoping you guys might have some ideas for books that might be helpful. He told me he has always struggled to read and understand the bible. Books steeped in theology, Catholicism, or “churchiness” will not touch him. Basically I’m looking for the story of the life of Christ and its significance for us today, or basically the bible in non biblical form but that also stays true to Catholicism. My ultimate goal is to bring him into the full faith of the Catholic Church but I need to introduce him to Jesus first. Lol! He is an ex-marine, marathoner, accountant, conservative type so anything that has those as topics with an underlying faith component might be helpful too!

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Maybe search for talks by Catholic Answers apologist Tim Staples who was a marine and a protestant but was helped into the Catholic Church by a marine buddy who was Catholic. He has one talk called Why Be Catholic that is pretty good.

As far as books Catholicism for Dummies is an easy to understand introduction to Jesus, His teachings and His Church.

This might be a different approach, but what about a book about priests that served during wartime.

As your father is a Marine (once a Marine, always a Marine), the story about Father Vincent Robert Capodanno (The Grunt Padre). You can get the book on Amazon. He served during Vietnam. Sounds like your Dad may have served during same time frame?

Or, Catholic Answers shop has The Miracle Of Father Kapuan, who was an Army Chaplain during the Korean War.

I have another book on my wish list… Walking With God: A Journey through the Bible. This book is written by Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins. Jeff Cavins does some really fantastic Bible studies. This book sounds like an overview of the Bible, without getting too deep in the scriptures, but takes you from Creation through the beginnings of the Church.

Another option would be a brief talk. What about something on MP3 or CD. Catholic Answers has some CDs, or you could look at Lighthouse Catholic Media. Very affordable and may present the information in “smaller” portions so that it doesn’t overwhelm.

Hope this helps. Just some different ideas.

🙂

I don’t mean to be pessimistic, but after reading your post, I doubt that any book will help. I think you need to pray for him, ask the Holy Spirit to fill his heart and then he will be filled with a hunger to know God in the Person of Jesus Christ.

God bless. I wish you both the best of God’s blessings.

I can do better tna that; LOOK for a private message from me

God Bless you,

If I were you I would tell my father that I’m not telling him what to believe. That you’re only teaching him how to be a good Catholic. It is always appropriate to discuss the bible when teaching your faith.
