I have three children (all 8), and all Catholic, and currently in a Catholic school. We currently read every night from a devotional book (Christian, but not Catholic) that tells stories about how to act, be good to each other, worship God, etc., but they aren’t Catholic based. Each story has a reference to a Bible passage, which we then read from a NAB bible. Then we read from a semi-children’s Bible called the Catholic Children’s Bible. We have been doing this every night for 3 or 4 years.

We’ve outgrown these books since we’ve read them so many times, and the devotional book is really not Catholic and involves some more protestant type stories I’d rather not read to my kids anymore.

I’m searching for some good (Catholic) devotional books that we (wife and I) can read to our kids each night and maybe focus on some bible passages and find a daily prayer book we can all do as a family. I’ve been looking at many of the Catholic online stores (EWTN, Catholic Answers Shop, Dynamic Catholic, Lighthouse Media and the Catholic Company), but it’s hard to discern which books would be good for family story and prayer time each night, so I’m hoping someone else out there can maybe recommend some books that would good for this sort of thing. FYI, my children, although 8, read and understand at a much higher level (maybe 5th grade) since we/they have been reading since very early on in life, and they read all the time, so I want to find some books that may be just out of their reach of understanding, and not too easy or geared towards their age, since having slightly more difficult concepts will help them grow and we will help them understand concepts they might not get as we read.

Thanks.

Check out the ‘A Year With’ series…

The Angels
The Bible
The Church Fathers
The Saints
With Mary

It is not calendar driven so you can start at any point.

For example each day in A Year With the Bible has an introduction to the Bible verse for that day. The actual Bible verse. A contemplation on the Bible verse and a final prayer.

This whole series has a pricey option for leather covers but there are the usual paperback versions that are more affordable.

This may or may not be what you are looking for, but we have been using Emmaus Road publishing’s Come and See Kids series. Each lesson has a Bible story and a corresponding craft, and usually a memory verse and prayer. We do the story one day and the craft the next. Each lesson also has a coloring sheet. There are several in the series, including Life of Jesus and Friends of God.

Check out Ascension Press’ Bible Timeline for Children. It is new off the presses and both kids and adults will learn and grow from these materials.
