Hi there!
I am looking for a good book for my niece for Christmas.

I purchased “Do Adam and Eve have Belly Buttons” but it is much to advanced, due to sexual topics of discussion, and her mother and I both thought inappropriate for a 12 year old.

Are you familiar with a book which can answer questions about the faith but not get into too much discussion about sexuality?

Much appreicated!

This may be of NO help…

But at that age, biographies- preferably written 1st person- of the saints were really really interesting, and gave a good living example of the Faith.

Thought I’d throw it out there for more ideas.

Does it have to be a book about Catholicism? If not, the Chronicles of Narnia is great. My almost 18 yr old re- read them this summer and my 14 yr old is reading them now.

Anne of Green Gables is also wonderful. My oldest daughter loved the series. —KCT

She is an avid reader and has read both already.
I am looking for something specific about the faith and why the Church teaches what it does.
Thanks for the suggestion though! 🙂

Am I allowed to bump this? I need more suggestions!

Thanks!

I just purchased St Patrick’s Summer: A Children’s Adventure Catechism by Marigold Hunt through Sophia’s Press. Also, I like the St Joseph’s Baltimore Catechism–we don’t memorize, but it is pretty clear. Also by Matthew Pinto, I like the Audio set Faith FAQs from St Joseph’s. There is some sexual morality on one side, I believe. St. Joe’s also has a nice set from RADIX that addresses modesty. Also, I love the Great Adventure by Jeff Cavins (that hits a lot of topics). My daughter really likes the Vision Biographies. They are engaging and also address doctrine in the context of a person’s life.

What I think would be a great gift is a magazine subscription for this age of Catholic girl. I’d love to know if anyone has any knowledge of an appealing magazine geared to young adolescents. I’d subscribe in a New York minute.

I thought of two more that are fun to read: A Philadelphia Catholic in King James’ Court. is an apologetics novel. And,Shadow of the Bear by Regina Doman (available through Bethlehem Books). The latter would definitely appeal to a young woman. Actually, Bethlehem books has some really good books for young teens.

One of my favorite books that I read around 12 years old was The Chosen by Chaim Potok. I was and am fascinated by the Jewish culture and ritual and culture of study that is depicted in the book. I think it planted seeds that inspired a desire for a deeper and more beautiful Catholicity than the tepid joyless doctrineless faith that I was being presented with in the early eighties.

Good luck!

the mother’s judgement must prevail, and the book is written for high-school age teens, but if the mother had a child in my CCD program I would advise her, as I do all parents in our Jr High parent meeting on this topic, that the most common age for teen pregnancy in our county is 13, and that a 12 year old is long overdue for education from her parents in the area of sexuality.

🙂
She has had quite a bit of education on the subject of sexuality. Her parents are open and don’t hesitate to inform, when and if it is appropriate. She asks a bunch of questions-even to her Auntie LynnieLew–

The book goes much more into detail about sexual actions and 80 pages of the book talk about these things. For a 12 year old, this is quite a bit I think.

Have you checked out Ignatius Press? How about Tan Books? Both have web sites.

What about the Catholic Girl’s Guide by Father Lasance? My mother gave it to me when I was about her age.🙂

And like an earlier poster mentioned, Bethlahem books has some superb ones…

And I still love reading them! 😃

It’s a shame you brainwash your children with your ideas. My parents are Catholic. However, they decided to let me choose my faith when the time is right. Why do you do this?

Most parents realize that it’s part of their job description to impart their morals and values to their children.
