I am really disappointed with the way books by catholic authors are so scarce and expensive if found. I do not know if this is only true for where I have been or if anyone out there agrees with me.
The one nationwide known catholic book store is “Pauline’s book and media Centre” found in the capital making it not accessible to all. And even when you get there the prices are… oh my God! Yet books by the evangelical authors are all over the place, even on the streets and one can afford to buy one book after the other. They have a good message too; my mother bought us quite a number, but now I feel I would have benefited more had the authors been catholic. I hope you agree.
Buying on line is worse, probably because our currency is doing badly, but also the means is another thing for most, making those books not available to the common person here.
Well, the reading culture they say is poor in Africa, but with such books available but not accessible; it does not help the situation. Again, does anyone agree with me, because it seems I’m beginning to give up on those books!
God bless.

You know what, you see a problem here, I see an opportunity. If its hard to get Catholic books in your area, why not see if other Catholics locally would also value a more ready supply? If local parishes would sell them maybe? If you then got together with some friends, brought a bulk order, you could fulfill the demand in the market and make a little money at the same time.

I see you’re in Uganda, and I feel bad that you have trouble getting books there. Here in the US there are more good, moderately priced books by wonderful Catholic authors, dead and alive, on Amazon than I can read.

I’m a theology professor. If you want to PM me a mailing address for you, I’ll send you some of mine. If you’re not comfortable with that, I understand, and that’s fine. 🙂

Catholic books are relatively overpriced and in limited supply in much of the USA, as well. It is a result of limited demand, I’d conjecture.

If there is a title you want, I highly recommend asking your local library to purchase it (and borrowing their other Catholic titles as well to show there is interest.)

Since you have access to the internet, you can try the Ethereal Library. Here is the site you can explore for Catholic books. They have books by Christian denominations as well.

I am a participant in an online Catholic Bible study. The book on amazon was one penny with the usual four dollars shipping. I have haunted goodwill for years looking for Catholic books. .75 to 1.50.

I suppose if you buy new releases, you have no choice but to pay full boat. In that case you might find a pal to spit the cost of the books with you, or join amazon prime. You could also consider SELLING the books on amazon or half.com when you are finished with them. There are many ways you can bring down your yearly cost for books.

This would be an excellent project for a parish or group to take up - to do some research on what Catholic books would be most desired by the community, and where to send them and how much to raise for shipping. Here in the U.S. there are books available for little money at thrift stores and places.

Forgive me for my ignorance - would books in American English be useful, or are there more speakers of other languages? Do you need Bibles and Catechisms also, or just other books? Or a combination? Do parishes have libraries or reading rooms where the books could be stored or a shop where they could be sold at reduced cost? Let’s brainstorm - this might be doable! 🙂

Catholic textbooks are really hard to find. For one of my Master’s level courses in Moral Theology we had to buy 12 books, some very expensive, and we sometimes used only one or two chapters from some. Other times we didn’t use textbooks per se, but books written by prominent theologians, etc. And, we did a lot of online reading, encyclicals, etc. I really dislike reading online, but it saved a lot of money.

I save money by buying e-books from Amazon for kindle. You do not need a kindle, you can download a free Kindle app. I also purchase e- books for my apple I phone.

This is the finest offer of charity I’ve seen in a long time.
Way to go!

Actually, the official language in Uganda is English,(they say British English, but it is still English) which also happens to be the national language. My own opinion would be that we need every thing. About libraries or reading rooms, I can confidently say NON cause I have never heard of or seen any. A nearby prayer center spared a room for a book shop but the last time I checked there were only portraits of the Blessed John Paul the second on the shelves.
Entebbe is about 45mins drive from our capital kampala, am just trying to say the setting is not rural by our standards; so you can imagine. It is Pauline publications in the heart of the city and they try/ are doing a good job cause they travel to take services to the people/ parishes.
Also, I think it is hard to demand for what you have never seen or heard about.
Thank you all for writing and sorry for note letting the conversation flow like it should.
God Bless.

Books are expensive but a good quality
Very gifted Protestant preachers read serious Catholic books.
The scarcity and the rarity of literature says about its values.

I would not agree that such is the case here in the USA. But it depends on the book.
But yes I can imagine in Africa - with importation etc it can be expensive as can many things coming from afar.
