I’ve been considering creating a Catholic card game. The game would involve the Saints and mysteries. I’m just in the beginning stages and would like some (name removed by moderator)ut from everyone here.

I’m thinking the game would involve the fight against satan. Therefore I could go two ways with this…
  1. One player plays satan and his demonic forces, and the other plays the army of Saints. They battle it out for the good of mankind.
  2. Both players play the Saints and attempt to defeat satan first.
The first seems to me like it would be more fun, but I wonder what the implications could be. I don’t want this to come off as sacrilage (the Saints being defeated my demons). The second guarantees that satan will loose, and instead the strategy is in the players to decide which saints they want to use in harmony to defeat him first.

What do you all think?
God Bless!

(p.s. if you are familiar with similar catholic games, let me know)

I would think if you are trying to make it a solidly Catholic game, go with option 2. There are many games on the market now, especially video games (though yours is a card game, I know =), which let you “choose your own adventure” and be good or evil. Often people end up picking evil. Plus, if you intend to instill virtue to the players, it would be best to let them fight against evil, rather than put them in a position to learn more about evil and take pleasure in using it to win. We need to bring back the love for good!

Ever since it was mentioned once on The West Wing as the game that the president was tormenting his aide, Charlie, by teaching him to play, I’ve thought Scopa d’Assi to be an intriguing game, with a Catholic angle.
Charlie Young: “Sorry – I was up late with the president playing Scopa d’Assi. It’s an obscure Italian card game, the cards are in Latin. He told me Sinatra gave him the deck, but I think he was just trying to get me to stay longer.”

WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS THINK OF THIS…

A game where the idea is similar to UNO only instead of matching numbers, you match characteristics of the saint pictured. Like if there is a St. Paul down, you can lay another St. Paul down, or a St. with a sword (like St. Paul’s pictures).

Got me?

Curious,

First of all, let me say: GREAT idea. Boy does this sound like fun.

Second of all: out of the two choices you presented above I think number 2 is absolutely the way you should go. If you are going to have this type of “battle” type game – like “settlers of Catan” two player card game or “Hera and Zues” two player card game then you should do it in a way that “the forces of evil” will absolutely lose – otherwise it just wouldn’t be right. Your idea of two “good guys” teaming up on evil is a great idea – however the implementation might be tricky (especially keeping it exciting).

The mechanics of a game that does not involve one of the players being “evil” will be much more difficult to come up with – but I think its worth it.

Third: your Uno idea is FANTASTIC. Just think of all the categories that you can use for making possible matches or sets: Old Testament, New Testament, Instrument of Martydom, Iconic symbol, Virtue, etc.

Perhaps it would require a player to “justify” the reason that two or three cards match.

For instance:
Lets say you have the “St. Stephen” card. You could attach the “Rock” card in order to make a match (instrument of martydom, he was stoned to death) or you could add the “New Testament” card (because he was a St. of the new covenant).

Conversely, if you had the “St. Peter” card you could *also *match it up with the “Rock” card, because Peter was “The Rock”. Don’t foget the “Fish” card because he was a fisherman, etc. etc.

Just throwing out ideas.
What do you think?

VC…

…I think that is a an awesome idea for the Uno idea.

Would you like to collaborate?

Go ahead, develop an Uno-like (or other) game…

…But I still think the cards should be in Latin 😛

hey st.curious

i think you should use the saints before they became saintly, that way you can work on their fualts and perfect their virtues. you could also have certin cards that help the virtues ( like armor or weapons ) of course that’s more of a video game.(which is what i do) but it could be really awesome anyways 👍 . you could also use ordianary people and make your own saints, kinda like the sims, that way it would help the person playing work on thier biggest faults and gain more graces. while playing a card game 😃 . there are just soo many options… any ways. i have alot of ideas, it’s just hard for me to make my brain work at night. so, give me an aim sometime, and i can tell you all the cool stuff i’m thinkin of.

My son and I are thinking of the same thing. We were going to use prayer cards and assign hierarchicle values to the, e.g. Blessed Mother being most powerful, ect. (excepting Jesus, but we were going to keep him as trump as nothing can defeat him).

I like the ideas posted though. If we come up with other ideas we will post them to see what you think.

Regards 👍

If this is going to be a *collectible * Catholic card game, may I suggest the name…

Oh no Tee, you just didn’t…(banishes Tee from this thread!)

Interesting idea guardian-girl. I’ll think on that. I’d love to see someone make the Sims into a “saint-making” game. Where you worship and help people, etc. and try to become a saint and go to heaven before you die. That would rule.

Then again…

What if it was a card game where the idea was just that, to be granted sainthood and go to heaven? Like… you have you, and some cards that determine your life. You can join an order, etc. Pray, etc. I just came up with this so the idea isn’t clear in my head yet.

Thoughts?

If we went with a strategy based game it would get more and more difficult to pull off. I’m serious about this. I would try to find a publisher for this in a heartbeat. Problem is, collectible card games involve a lot more cards. That’s why I’m thinking a complete game in 110 cards or less is good.

I was considering a card game where people draw through a deck and try to find cards that go together to create a 3+ card combo. For instance…

If a person collected “Father”, “Son”, and “Holy Spirit” they would have the Trinity. If someone collected “Mary”, “Jesus”, “Joseph” they would have an obvious combo. If someone collected “Jesus, Judas, and Pharisee” they would have the conspiracy. Etc…

The combinations would be subject to those playing. In other words, if the player could come up with how they relate directly to eachother then it would be accepted and counted.

The rule would be that each association must be a direct one, we aren’t talking “six degrees of seperation” here.

This game would feel a little like Rumy in that people could add onto others’ piles. So that if someone had out “Zacharias,” “Elizabeth”, and “John the Baptist”, another player could add an “Angel” card on to that (since an angel visited them to tell them of her baby John’s coming). If the group allows it, it’s good.

At the same time, a looser combination would be Zacharias," “Elizabeth”, and “John the Baptist”, coupled with “Mary.” Though, if the group allows it, very well.

What do you guys think? What do you forsee as problems?

I think that the game would be very popular if there were many different ways to win. Cards need to have several effects/abilities to make many option in the game. You could come out with different versions of the game(ex: Fighting the occult, protestant reformation, fighting sin, pro-life. The possibilities are endless. St. Curious, you could make far more than 110 cards, but that is a good start. Because you could repeat cards in different editions of the game with different pictures and effects/avilities. I know plenty of teens who would probably learn so much from a game like this that they would turn their lives around just after one game. If you are serious about this, and want it to be successful, I would try to make it geared toward teens and not families, older adults, or children. A good idea would be to ask people to post ideas for cards( what they do or pictures) on this forum or a webpage or myspace. If you promote it enough, you will get hundreds of card suggestions.

Companies that would market the cards:
