Can non-catholics be buried in catholic cemeteries? And if so, under what conditions?

Catholic cemeteries are individually run by each archdiocese/diocese and are usually incorporated as a juridical entity separate and distinct from the archdiocese/diocese.

Speaking of the Archdiocese of Chicago, the regulations governing burials in Catholic cemeteries allow the burial of non-Catholics as follows:

WHO MAY BE BURIED IN A CATHOLIC CEMETERY?

The church expects the burial of Catholics in Catholic cemeteries. To avoid breaking close family ties, non-Catholic members of Catholic families may be interred in a Catholic cemetery. In the Archdiocese, Catholic burial, including the funeral Mass, is permitted for a baptized non-Catholic who might reasonably be presumed to desire or prefer Catholic burial services. Such a decision would be appropriate where the non-Catholic party worshipped regularly at the Catholic Church or identified with the Catholic Church more than any other.

The rules and regulations could be similar throughout the Catholic Church.

Thanks a lot for the info. The funeral of this person was in a non-caatholic church, but the burial was in a catholic cemetery. He may have been a family member that had fallen away from the church. Thanks again.

I would imagine that you would find in rural communities that have been losing population over the years, they would be thrilled to sell cemetery lots to respectful purchasers.

Cemetery maintenance is extremely expensive these days.
