I am sure those who wrote the letters in the first place did not mean for us to pore through every passage looking for our own meaning. The whole point of Christianity is to worship God and do His will.
The best place to worship is at Mass, the best place to study the Bible should be a small faith group. Most parishes have faith groups, study groups, it is just that they aren’t promoted as well as they are in churches like evangelical churches. If there isn’t one at your Church consider starting one, many Catholics are just waiting for this sort of thing to be organized at their Church, feel free to suggest it to your priest or parish director.
I am in a Bible study group at my Church and it is pretty good, as Catholics it just isn’t in the culture of most cradle Catholics to study the Bible. Maybe people feel it is the job of priests and nuns to study.
Due to Sola Scriptura it is necessary to really study scripture if you are going to make a decent defense of the faith. Which is easy, once you study the Bible as it thoroughly backs up Catholicism.
Protestant culture necessitates reading and studying the Bible as the whole faith rests on it. I think the Catholic Church is the best religion to study the Bible in as the Church gave the Bible to the world. The Catholic Church has the fullest understanding of the Bible, and this liberates a person to learn more, as they have an understanding they can build off of. In other words everyone doesn’t have to reinvent or relearn a whole new understanding with each generation. We have 2000 years of understanding to help us, no other church comes close.
