Catholic church is not a cult or is it

Hey y’all…i keep hearing people say that the Catholic church is a cult it makes no sense to me as by definition I think all churches are cults and not to mention the Protestant church is in the minority being a smaller denomination so really there more of a cult than the Catholic church I just don’t understand how they make us out to be a cult when they aren’t… they are the minority and not to mention that no one believed what they believed until 1500 years after Jesus resurrection and their Traditions are man made they come from man I’m tired of these accusations as the Protestants believe something more radical…“oh martin luther, john smith, my pastor, etc… Had to come and start preaching the truth”…yea right?!.. they also take our Bible take 7 books out and call it their own if we are cult and wrong get your own Bible
 
“Cult” is now a rhetorical word to denounce religions and groups one doesn’t like. I’m not even sure it had a clear meaning in the '60s either, although many of what was called “cults” then had real, rational reasons to be disliked.

In the distance past, “cult” referred to veneration towards a particular object, like for example, you could call the Dominicans the “cult of St. Dominic.” There is nothing negative about this sense, it is where we get terms like “culture” from (because the society’s cult tends to be, properly speaking, the basis of its culture).

Ok that makes sence. .well said. The term is used subjectively depending on your views of Christianity. Its hard to believe any denomination…i simply choose to believe one that is older and deeply rooted in history…that is the catholic church

Depends on how the term cult is being used. It has more than one meaning, and is used colloquially in a narrow, derogatory way the broader definition does not connote.
