The archdiocese of Boston has a section on the history of the church in Massachusetts on there website. You could email them and see if there is a book. I took a little while to look around on the web and could find much else to help you out. Sorry.
What part of the century and the state? 1812 in Springfield, MA (no parishes until nearly 1900) is going to be far different than 1890 in Boston. (first catholic church built in 1803)
