Catholic Churches in the Modesto (California) area

I was born and raised in San Francisco. My wife was a military brat who’s family settled in San Francisco when she was in high school. We moved to the Central Valley when we first got married. We eventually moved back to San Francisco.

Now we are looking at moving back to the Modesto area. I am wondering if anyone can tel me about the arch diocese and the Catholic culture of the Modesto area. When my wife and I got married, I was not a practising Catholic. My wife was a protestant and still is, though she was baptized atholic as a child. I left the Catholic Church at 17. I eventually became a non denominastioal Christian before coming home to the Catholic Church about five years ago.

We are leaving San Francisco for severaql reasons. Not the least is the immoral condition the the town I once loved so well has fallen into. I am hoping for a more conservative or orthodox Catholic experience in Modesto. I also want to put our youngest in Catholic school, which my wife supports.

If you could afford traveling a few hours each Sunday, there are two Latin Mass locations in Sacramento and a few in the San Jose area. If you want to know, I could tell you more about them.

I would highly recommend moving closer to the Sacramento area, since there are two very good Latin Mass chapels there. One run by the FSSP, the other by the SSPX.

The name of the FSSP chapel is St. Stephen the First Martyr.

It is a very large parish and has good choir, daily masses, and a school.

The SSPX chapel is much smaller, and it also has a small school.

I don’t know about the chapels in the Bay Area as much, since I only go down there occasionally. However, unfortunately, most of the Catholic churches in Northern California (except for the Latin Mass chapels) are liberal…
