A Catholic College has a course in its philosophy program called “Feminine ethics”. Has anyone taken this course? Does anyone know what sort of course it is. That is, what sort of philosophy is taught in the class?

Is this course taught at Notre Dame, by any chance?
Possibly, but that isn’t the college I have in mind. The name of the course is a bit enigmatic. I mean I have a sneekin’ suspicion what is taught and I could do some research I suppose but that would take more time than I hope I’ll have to spend if someone here can bring me up to speed a bit.

That’s such a generic title that it could include almost anything. Take a look at the syllabus for the class as it’s being taught in that particular school by that particular professor.

Yes, thats what I had planned to do. I was hoping for a bit of a discussion. Does it help to know that it is the College of St. Benedict?

Not really. The title gives no time period and is too broad a term to be helpful, at least not without a detailed description of the course. Titles like ancient or modern philosophy are helpful as are individual philosophers. Even broad categories like metaphysics and epistemology are more helpful than “feminist philosophy”.

Perhaps they mean to include such things as: men and women are identical across the board and that no complementarity exists, the power women have over their bodies in regards to abortion, and even the repudiation of the institution of marriage and the role of women as mothers. But this is only a wild shot in the dark. It could be many things.

peace,
Michael

Please give the professor an email, tell the professor you are considering the course, and ask for the syllabus or the texts to be read, as well as about the format of the class.

I regularly do this with my courses.

When you are done with that, post some of the text titles here, and we’ll be able to judge fairly quickly whether it’s worth taking the class.

God bless,
Rob

Thank you for your help everyone. I plan to do what you suggest Rob.

Annie39:

The Church can save a lot of work. Get a referral from the diocese or the Holy See, or ask for accredits from Church Authority. (same goes for appropriate literature.)

If it’s bogus or questionable, you’ll know right away.
