Hello, everyone.

I’m just wondering if anyone knows of any Catholic communities in Canada; I don’t mean clerical communities or orders. I mean a geographical area predominated by lay people who are actually practicing Catholics. Even a neighbourhood within a town or city would be good.

I am tired of living in a secular place with literally no Catholic friends and where the members or my parish are older or younger than myself. It would also be nice to not have to deal with people’s anti-Catholicism so regularly.

I am about to graduate from my professional program (finally!) and can find work anywhere in the country (my profession is in high demand); so, I don’t have to look at a specific region.

Thanks in advance.

The only neighbourhoods that come to mind are predominantly Filipino… Filipinos are the lifeblood of the local Church here in Vancouver.

Thanks for your reply.

Living among people from cultures outside of Canada doesn’t bother me a bit; the city I live in now has a fairly large Chinese and Middle Eastern population.

Out of curiosity, which communities in Vancouver?

There are a lot of devout Filipinos in the Joyce Ave area- as testified by the 7 packed, often standing room only, mostly Filipino attended, Sunday Masses at St Mary’s.

I’ll look at the job postings in the Vancouver area, then.

WThe culture as a whole is very progressive, very secular, and very much not Catholic… but the archdiocese is a healthy and thriving one for the minority who are Catholics, and a big part of that is the large number of Filipinos.

Prince Edward Island has always had a strong Catholic heritage, owing to the fact that it has been the predominant denomination in the province for many years. The provincial university has a Catholic chaplain and holds a Mass for its graduates, and quite a number of its institutions have Catholic roots. Until very recently, you could not actually get an abortion in PEI owing to its Catholic heritage.

I have family on PEI (mostly around Charlottetown). I haven’t yet encountered any particularly Catholic areas, but I really haven’t been outside of Charlottetown. What regions are you thinking of?

You can search by riding for demographic details through StatsCan like ‘Immigrant status and selected places of birth’ and ‘Religion’ to help but you don’t know how many are actual practising Catholics and the map tab may not show fully how the community is laid out especially rural areas. It’s an option though it could be a waste of time.

PEI is the last catholic bastion in mostly secular/atheistic Canada; unfortunately there is not a lot going on there otherwise 😦

Sadly, no, but it is pretty!

To the OP, I found even Charlottetown quite Catholic as opposed to other capital cities in Canada. I guess the followup question would be, what characteristics are you looking for to define a place as “Catholic”?

Mostly made up of Catholics who are actually practicing the faith. There are plenty of places with people who are Catholic in name only, so there’s no point in moving there when it’s like everywhere else.

Thanks for the resource, but it’s not particularly useful in this situation. I may need it when trying to find some other kind of information, though.

Wow! I didn’t know this sort of place existed in Canada. Thanks so much! I’m going to look into this more. 🙂
