Does that mean that you should not use NFP to plan your family. Does that mean that you should have kids every nine months to the possible detriment of the wife’s health and pressure to take care of the existing infants since the nuclear family has replaced the extended family in present day society
You must certainly can use NFP to plan your family. But you are called to be generous with your fertility, too.

You can use NFP to space your pregnancies so they aren’t too close, along with breastfeeding.

You can use NFP if there is a good reason you shouldn’t have another child- including that the mother is experiencing health concerns.

Does breast feeding stop the mother from getting pregnant?

What is catholic beliefs on breast pumps so the father can help with feeding the baby and be able to look after them as well and it not just be up to the mother all the time but the father will have equal responsiblity.

The reason I ask this is because it must be exhusting for a new mother (whether 1st child or not) to have to get up during the night to feed the baby, especially when she is still recovering from childbirth. And as I know I can cope well on very little sleep I can quite happily wake up through out the night to feed the baby (I used to look after exs sisters baby over night sometimes when she had to work a night shift and I did all the night feeds/day feeds changed his nappies (diapers) etc as for some reason he seemed to prefer me to my ex. So it would be an honour to do this for my own children and to be honest I can’t imagine not getting up if my children needed feeding, changing etc during the night and I would never let my wife do everything as that would be unfair as they are both our children so both of our resposibility if that makes sense? -Aaron

Look up ecological breastfeeding. In summary if a woman breastfeeds a newborn on a continuous basis it will postpone the return on a woman’s period and thus the ability to get pregnant on average between 14-15 months. You should be able to find an online resource that would explain how often that means. I’m not aware of there being anything wrong with using a breast pump, but I’m sure someone else can chime in on this point who is more knowledgeable.

Biological [Ecological] breastfeeding has a tendency to suppress the return of the wife’s fertility…for some amount of time…different for everyone. My wife’s fertility will normally return after about 13 months or so post-partum. Some women will go longer, some not near that long.
[HA…Nate13 beat me to it!]

Your wife can pump and you can take a turn feeding your baby. 👍

Oh, you had also asked about hand-genital or mouth-genital acts. The marital act must be completed in the natural way. I suugest, as others also have, reading the Catechism (the section on Matrimony, the ends of marriage, masturbation, etc… ) as well as Humanae Vitae and Casti Connubii. Also invest in a copy of Theology of the Body…it is a wonderful work!

Using a breast pump is not a moral issue. Neither is breastfeeding. But taking advantage of the naturally infertility that can occur when you breastfeed in the most natural way (ecological breastfeeding) is good for some. Using a breast pump interferes with this and will bring back fertility early. If a family decides not to ecologically breast feed and the mother chooses to pump then that’s perfectly fine and if the family needs to postpone the next birth they can choose to use NFP or complete abstinence.

So oral sex is wrong then as it cannot bring life into this world? What if it is used as foreplay not to bring orgasm (which is what can result in children) but just to bring pleasure to your wife and turn her on (or her for you) before you make love as that can still end in children and you haven’t done anything that can’t result in children as it was part of the process to turn your wife on prior to making love with her but still with the end result (the posibillity of her getting pregnant)?

N.B. Oral not to waste sperm (that gives life) but to bring her pleasure prior to orgasm ie no orgasm during/because of oral.

So naturally breast feeding can stop a womans period for a while but not breast pumps?
I personally think a mans wife would prefer being able to rest after the exhaustion/agony of childbirth and have her husband help with the children and abstain from sex for a period of time rather than have to have no help at all with the feeding of the baby as to give her time to recover and relax and enjoy being a mum? What do you think help with feeding the baby but have to abstain for a period of time or no help feeding but can enjoy sex without getting pregnant for a period of time?

You misinterpreted what was said about breastfeeding. Breast pumps are fine. It was merely stated that a breast pump will not postpone the return of fertility as long as natural breastfeeding will so if you wish to use ecological breastfeeding to space pregnancies using a breast pump will not work as well as natural breastfeeding. It was merely a statement of fact that might be important to some people and may not to others. Either way of doing it is fine.

Also, oral stimulation as foreplay is fine as long as it is just that, foreplay to the real thing.

Another question slightly off topic RE: oral sex

Is it ok for your wife to orgasm from oral sex as a womans orgasm is not needed for procreation as she is either ovulating or not so she can still get pregnant regardless of whether she orgasms or not (although a husband should always, always ensure his wife’s pleasure during the marital act every time as it is not just about him)

I’ve yet to meet a mother who would tell you that childbirth is “agony” 🙂

How many mothers have you met? Cause I have given birth naturally four times and I would say it’s by far the most agonizing experience I have had. And that each one has been more agonizing than the last one.

Amazing? Yes, once the baby is OUT.

Pretty sure God was making a point when he made it the consequence for Eve’s part in original sin.

HAHA!! Yes, my wife has given birth 3 times so far (all natural) and she agrees that “agony” is a fitting description…until the baby is out of course.

Aaron, I don’t think it matters per se when the wife climaxes, so long as the marital act is completed in the natural manner. If you were to give your wife that pleasure and then not complete the marital act, that would be a sin. Someone please correct me if I am not saying this right.
(Oh, and PLEASE read those encyclicals that were previously linked…they will explain all of this in great detail.)

If its not agony giving birth then why do you think sex is a definate no after childbirth… Because it is still sore… Down there (for want of a better phrase). That would be why I would want to do as much as I can to help with the baby to help my wife have a chance to recover not just from the pain but also the exhaustion from being in labour for x amount of time not so we can have sex sooner but because I would genuinely love and care about my wife and her needs (and also because babies are soo cute… Yes even when they are crying at 3 am. Been there done that when I used to babysit over night for exs sister when she had to work the night shift). My sleep or my wife getting a much needed rest not a hard choice as my wife and children will always come first. -Aaron
