Catholic costumes?

Do you think it’s O.K. for a child to dress like their favorite Saint, the apostles, the Blessed Mother, Jesus, etc.? What about the Pope, priests, nuns, etc.?

What about an adult?

I know that St. Therese dressed like St. Joan of Arc.

When I was a child for a Christmas concert at school I dressed like an angel and for a Christmas concert at church I dressed like Our Lady. Also, as a child I dressed like a Nun for Halloween.

St. Therese was in a play about St. Joan, not dressing up for fun.

I personally don’t like to see religous costumes outside of plays, movies, etc. and think it’s disrespectful. Too many people wear them at Halloween to be just that. I used to work with a former priest who had a chip on his shoulder about the Church. He wore clerical garb to an office Halloween party with a pocket watch that ran backwards and said “Roman time.”

Let the child pick. It should not be limited for only saints, unless this is for a Christmas pageant or something.

It’s only fair to the child.

If children can dress up as superman, they why can’t they dress up as saints they consider heroes? Better than dressing up as a vampire or something of the like for Halloween.

I agree with this… i dont really like that children dress up as vampires and skeleton etc for Halloween.

But on the other hand, on Halloween, when you see children out and about in a nun’s habit or a roman collar etc, the first thing that comes to my mind is that they are making fun or protesting the Catholic Faith.
I think this way because one of my friends when i was in 5th grade dressed up as a nun. I said “Oh are you Catholic?” She said “No, i think Catholics are funny. Who would really dress like this and pray on some beads like these.” Then she flounced away. >.>

For the Feast of All Saints in November, the young children dress up as a favorite saint and process into the church at the start of mass in our parish.

My kids have dressed up for the All Saints Parade at Sunday School and in Kindergarten at the Catholic School… it’s a cute parade!

I know what you mean about this. More than once on Halloween have I seen adult couples dress up as a priest and Catholic school girl. And they didn’t do it out of respect.

Although, when I was a kid and in gradeschool, the 1st graders at our school around All Saints Day would dress up as their patron saint and then do a presentation of their saint for the whole school and their families in the parish church. I always loved it. Unfortunately, I never got to do it because I started going to that school in 2nd grade, but I got to see my brother and sister do it. It was adorable.

If your child wants to dress up as a saint because he/she looks up to him/her, I think that would be very nice.
