Catholic Countries Rank in World Fertility

Are we faithful enough to the teachings of the Church when it comes to Natural Family Planning, Abortion, and Contraception? Haiti is the only majority Catholic country that makes the top 50 at 50 rank in fertility. Children born per 1000 mothers at 3.81, Paraguay is at rank 51. Haiti is skeptical on how orthodox most of its Catholics are, considering half the country practices some form of voodoo. Muslim countries far out number us in births, do you think this sheds light on the fact that we need to be more faithful?

Sadly, the answer is no…but this is no surprise, not for me at least. Haven’t you heard that less than 5% of Catholics are faithful to the Church’s teachings on birth control?

At least some of the “Catholic countries” (Ireland, for example, and France just nudged towards the 2.0 mark last year, as well as countries in Latin America) are above replacement level in their fertility rates. A fertility rate of 3.81 is astronomically high and unheard-of in the developed world, for a multitude of reasons.

In the end, I’m not sure worldwide fertility rates are the best measure of faithfulness to Church teachings on sexuality and birth control. With immigration and the state of religion and the Church in the modern world, there really are no “Catholic countries” left where the majority of the population is an active Catholic.
