I’ve wondered this myself. Through both college and graduate school, I’ve joked with my (married) sister that I’m the LVS—last virgin standing. There’s just no one to talk to about these things once you’re in your mid twenties. And yes, the world would have you believe that “serious” dating has to involve living together, or being physical. What helps me is to actually look into the relationships of my friends. Sometimes they sound so “great” and “serious”…but a closer look reveals them to seem rocky, immature, or unfulfilling on even practical, secular levels. When you haven’t experienced a “serious” relationship in the secular sense, it seems way more glamourous and important than it really is.
The need to “live with someone” or “sleep with someone” to be serious is not a need at all…its an excuse. So many girls have asked me: “but what if you marry someone…and your not sexually compatible?” I don’t know about you ladies, but I can tell “compatible” or not just fine from snuggling on a couch–a kiss goodnight, or just plain old talking about things we think are sexy and things we think are icky (even that can be done in a non-lustful way!)!
As for dating a catholic versus a non-catholic–sure a catholic: be warned! not all “catholic” guys are good guys, and not all “noncatholic” guys will dump you after three dates! I was sick of dating guys who didn’t share my faith, and went on a few dates with a very devout christian (not catholic…but very religious). He happened to be absolutely worse than the non-christians! pushy. physically, and also emotionally. he was very manipulative, lead me down some bad paths–and I regret trusting him when he told me he too was “waiting until marriage”
…now there are plenty of lovely catholic and christian guys out there, but don’t assume they’re lovely just because they’re catholic!
The past few years I’ve been very seriously dating (in a real sense…not that secular nonsense) a man who’s only vaguely non-denominational christian. I was worried about this, but he respects and admires my faith. He didn’t blink an eye at my wanting to wait until marriage–even though he’s been with several women in the past. The relationship works beautifully, and yeah, we sure like to cuddle
. We’re talking seriously about marriage, although the timing will be difficult–he’s in the military and could deploy at any time (say a prayer?)
I guess all I’m saying is don’t write off anybody who isn’t catholic–just be wary and strong in your faith.
Also, don’t be overly trusting of someone who is–be equally wary!
Take heart, you’ll find him sooner than you think, and the relationship will be easier than you think
I’ll be praying for you.
