I am wanting to use Gratia Dei or Dei Gratia [by the Grace of God] as my personal email and/or letter sign off. Is that proper? With a little research I have done, it seems to have been used by British royalty as part of their title? Obviously, that is not my intent. I just love the idea of signing off my message with “By the Grace of God”, but am unaware if there is tradition behind it that may misconstrue my simple intent into something unintended.

What’s wrong with “God Bless”?

In gratia Dei, being latin, I would assume that most general folks wouldn’t have a clue what you meant and may think you’re just being uppity - so I’d be careful with whom I used it, if I used it at all.

Thank you for your reply! Of course there is nothing wrong with God Bless, which is what I have been using. I just love the idea of living in God’s grace, and the latin form of it sounds beautiful.

However, being that I know very little about any implications latin forms may carry, I wanted to make sure I am not unintentionally spreading some historical or traditional implications that I am unaware of.

Now that’s a good suggestion! I can’t see anything wrong in using it, except that the majority may not know what it means …
