We all know that the job of evangelizing in the Catholic Church belongs to the priests, but, do you think that ot would be beneficial for the Church to get an advertizing budget? I mean, with the secular society we live in here in the U.S., It may be a way to go. What do you think?

That’s a rather pre-Vatican II viewpoint… we are ALL called to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ (including the Church that He established.)

I agree with you David.

There is a Catholic book called, “Holy Boldness” which talks about Saints who felt the importance of speaking out strongly about our Catholic beliefs. We need to be more bold in our Faith so that so much falsehoods about Christs Church be lessened.

God Bless Pope Benedict XVI!

Not a good idea.
Then we could say "but Lord, didn’t we do billboards, bus posters, magazine and radio ads in your name ? …and He will say; “Depart from me you workers of iniquity, I never knew you !”

(1)…Who said it was the priest’s job ? … Jesus csrtainly did not.
He said it is the job of every baptized catholic.
besides that…
"Whoever acknowledges me before men I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
Whoever disowns me before men I will disown before my father in heaven."

Whoever
says to me that the job of evangelizing is not assigned exclusively to priests.

by the way…are you in advertising ?

hope I didn’t step on your toes

the job of evangelizing belongs to all Catholics by virtue of their baptism. we are called to evangelize by witnessing life in Christ through our words, choices and actions in the family, workplace, community and political life. that is the role of the laity.

The early Church survived persecution and eventually overcame pagan Rome through the witness of it’s members.
If we are to survive this current pagan society it will be through the witness of it’s members.

The Evangelizing job belongs to all the Baptized, mostly the Lay Faithful. Should the Church spend more time and effort in “advertising” yes! We all need to start inviting our neighbors to Mass and start putting out Catholic tracts like Pillar of Fire / Pillar of Truth. IT would include writing letters to editors when papers print things misleading about the Catholic Church.

Sadly, most cradle Catholics do not know how to explain their faith biblically to a Protestant or even a non believer. I would bet dollars to donuts that converts from Protestantism know more biblically about the Catholic faith then cradle Catholics themselves. That is just a gut feeling.
Also when one explains their faith to another, they have to not just know it reasonably well, but defend it from honest criticism. This takes more than just going in and out the doors to mass every week. It takes personal study at home. Just how many Catholics from all walks of life really take the time to really do this at home, especially when working all day, raising kids and wanting to watch TV or do other recreational activities?

Many Protestants I know do this a lot. Until CA and EWTN came online, there wasn’t much available for Catholics, at least in my awareness in my city.

"I have come to light a fire on the earth.
How I wish the blaze were ignited !"
Luke 12:49

"Were not our hearts burning inside us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us ?" Luke 24:32

"Then he opened their minds to the understanding of the Scriptures." Luke 24:45

Jesus replied:“You are badly misled because you fail to understand the Scriptures and the power of God.” Matt.22:29

" And now, brothers, I beg you through the mercy of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, your spiritual worship." Romans 12:1

at the Altar…when our priest says “Lift up your hearts…”

The most excellent place to start a fire in our hearts.

Ok then, if the job belongs to all the faithful, why don’t we have evangelizing classes like some other denominations do?

I think what I’m getting at is that the whole evangelizing thing needs to get more active!

We have 150 members at our parish. One time we printed in our Sunday periodical that we were going to have a Wednesday eve bible study and all were welcomed to attend. Guess how many showed up out of the 150? 3 couples and me. That was it! So my point is, if you can’t even get Catholic members to attend a half hour bible study during the week, what makes you think they would even be interested in learning how to evangelize people? Our members feel they have “done their thing” by just attending mass once a week and coming to sponsored dinners and buying raffle tickets to win door prizes. I am not being over judgmental, but simply telling the truth.

Hi Peity,

Right on! I totally agree. We’ve had the same experience in the past. We have had the best bible study the past 3 1/2 years at our parish. In the past we didn’t. I think one key, after you get people there, is to have a good Commentary. We use the Little Rock series and, although there are some things I don’t like about it, it does give some good commentary. Otherwise, if you don’t have a good commentary, all you end up doing is reading the text and asking each other: What does that mean to you? You aren’t going to get much that way. Once you have a good commentary, the word will spread and you will have maybe a small study group but they will continue to come. We have about 20 that come every week for 1 1/2 hour study. It is great! I’ve seen how people grow in the faith through it. This has been going on for 3 1/2 years straight.

May God bless,

Tonight’s Catholic Answers live was on evangelization. I need to download it since I only heard parts of it.

I also live in a very small parish, and we’ve been doing a bible study series “Footsteps of God”. Our attendance has been growing with each 5 week session. The video and questions put out by Stephen Ray are EXCELLENT. We need to evangelize within the church if we are to evangelize to those who are not in full communion, either by attending other Christian denominations or by failing to acknowledge Christ in their lives.

God Bless,

CARose

Christ told His Apostles to go out and preach to all

nations. Everyone lays stress on evangelizing, especially
knowledge of the Scriptures.

Our individual lives are the finest form of evangelization.

If we convey peace and certainty, perhaps someone
will want to know why we have that peace and certainty.
This is where biblical knowledge helps, to reply to
questions put to us, but the questions may be a
response, originally, to what is seen in each of us.

Just my thought,

Hi, CARose!🙂

Our works prove our Faith. When others ‘see’ our Faith - through our works - we evangelize them. Thus every Catholic will evagelize if they live thier Faith.

We are are called to evangelize. Some are lay some are clergy. We each have a job to do in the body of Christ.
