I have a seven year-old who LOVES to read. Last summer he read the whole Magic Tree House series. He has read The Littles and Secret of the Droon. Now he wants to read some Cornelia Funke books–but I’m not totally sure they’re appropriate for a seven year-old. Does anyone know of any Catholic authors who have books for this age group?

Also I would like to buy some Catholic music CDs for Christmas but don’t always catch the artist’s name when I listen to Catholic Juke Box. Does anyone have any favorites?

Thanks for your help.

Bethlehem Books puts out LOTS of kids books, as do publishers like TAN and even Ignatius. Growing up, some of my favorite stories were King Arthur legends and alot of historical fiction, but my younger brothers and sisters had the benefit of Mary Fabian Windeatt’s biographies of the saints (published by TAN) among other great books.

It has been a tradition in my family that Mom and I picked books from Catholic publishers for Grandma to order as Christmas gifts (instead of clothes or other toys, etc.).

I am also working on some Catholic young adult fiction, but it isn’t ready yet 🙂

Good luck and happy reading!

Thank you for those suggestions, I will see what I can find online. I thought stories of the saints would be a great choice for him, but I hadn’t heard of Windeatt. Let us know when your work is done and good luck!

I would also recommend anything of Max Lucado’s children’s books.

Especially

“You are Mine” (my fav)
“Punchinello and the Most Marvelous Gift”
“You are Special”
and
“Because I Love you”

I do lots of shopping online - I like www.getfed.com for kid’s books.

Of course, I think EVERY child should read the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

For music, I like www.catholicmusicnetwork.com, there is also Sacred Heart Radio on line (I don’t have that web addy committed to heart…)

You can try :

www.catholickidsnet.org

My friend, David Howie, has done a number of cd’s for them (he writes & performs).

Some of the titles:
Jesus in the Eucharist
Our Lady of Guadalupe
The body ans the Blood
We can be saints too
Mary at the birthday (of the Church)

Really catchy tunes with lyrics that repeat over and over for the kids to catch. His idea is to teach and ingrain doctrine through music. My kids love it.

Dear Lewlo,

I love this website for Catholic kids: www.whippersnapperbooks.com.

We are a reading family and have come to treasure WhipperSnapper’s selection of books. Never led us wrong yet. It’s kind of like a Catholic Chinaberry. My favorite of their sections is “Catholic Stories.” They also have really informative reviews.

Best of luck,

Bella

I can only speak of the music side…

Steve Angrisano (from Oregon Catholic Press)
Jesse Manibusen (from Oregon Catholic Press)
Tom Booth (from Oregon Catholic Press)
Vince Nims (independent)

All of these artist are big in the youth ministry aspect of music. For a more adult musican…

Sarah Hart (Oregon Catholic Press)

Amy Welborn has some great books too… I love her Book of Heros and Book of Saints…

Thank you again, everyone. I have already made some purchases based on your suggestions and with Christmas coming up, I’ll be making more.

Tomie DePaulo has some beautifully illustrated books for kids.(The Clown of God is my favorite), including ones about The Virgin of Guadalupe, St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, Saint Christopher, the miracles of Jesus, the parables of Jesus, etc. They’re great!
