Hello,

I work at a Catholic Parish on a college campus, and one thing we’ve struggled with is trying to get the students excited about engaging in the fundraisers and development that goes into financially sustaining the parish. We recognize that they do not have much that they can give to the parish, but we would like them to help engage in our fundraising efforts in other ways.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? Do you know of any creative ways to engage students?

One of the best low cost, easy to put on, fundraisers I know of is Team Trivia Night.

$10 per player, teams of between 5 and 10 people. Get donations as prizes from area businesses, restaurants, etc.

Are they excited about attending the parish and being part of activities, but just not excited about soliciting donations or helping with fundraisers?

Or are they not excited about the parish at all? Is the parish serving their needs?

I ask because in my life I’ve been to college campus parishes that really didn’t seem to have much to do with the students and were more for serving “the local community” which were a bunch of people who happened to be living in the neighborhood and many of whom weren’t students; and other campus parishes that were really student-oriented and had a lot of social activities every week, like dinners, cookouts, Bible study, the priest taking the students for ice cream, etc.
Big difference in the level of engagement.

One of the parishes I mentioned that was really “more about the community” has to my knowledge ceased to exist and the kids now just troop up the street to the Italian National parish there, which is where a lot of them were already going in my day because the Masses there were more traditional and the church looked more like their own parishes back home.

It’s must so they’re not excited about the fundraising part. We’ve hosted a few phone a thons and have had a couple fundraising campaigns where we’ve tried to encourage the students to invite their family, friends, etc to participate but we haven’t been able to get students to buy into the process.

Could you perhaps work with a group of students to come up with fundraising ideas together? They may be more enthusiastic if they can offer some (name removed by moderator)ut. They’d also get more of a sense on how the fundraising can help, and the difference it would make.

I suppose you could also suggest it would be good to put on a resume/CV.
