In Croatia, Marko Perkovic, commonly known as “Thompson” is a Catholic metal band. The singer, Marko Perkovic, wears a St. Benedict Medal. Many of his songs are about the Catholic faith. I saw them last summer.

One song, for example is called “Ivane Pavle drugi” it’s about St. Pope John Paul II

I have no problem recommending Theocracy to people. Out of 29 released songs, I can think of one song (Nailed) and maybe two lines from two other songs that have bothered me as a Catholic. As PolycarpMeans mentioned, their musical quality is impeccable, so I don’t find is useful to jettison 27.9 songs that are utterly worthwhile for 1.1 songs that are questionable from a Catholic perspective.

As time went on and I talked to the band more about their perspective, I found the objectionable parts to be less problematic that I had originally thought. On the charge of Nailed being an anti-Catholic song, the band has said that “It’s just telling a story. It’s the story of what happened at a particular moment in time,” not an indictment of Catholics.

When the band leader (and lyric writer) was asked in an interview what denomination he was, he said “I grew up Baptist. The church I’m going to now is sort of non-denominational. I wouldn’t say I identify myself in any particular way as far as different sects and denominations. As long as the important core beliefs are the same. People are always going to have minor things they disagree on. Our guitar player is Catholic, so we come from all different sorts of backgrounds, but all have the same core beliefs.”

I think that gives a good sense of their attitude towards Catholics.

I’ve always wanted to start a band like this. I have Theocracy on my playlist, but some of their lyrical content is blatantly Protestant (sola fide, no need for sacraments, etc.) in theological terms.

Yes, Wampa helped assuage my fears regarding “Nailed” when “As the World Bleeds” came out. Personally, I’d rather put up with a few songs like that than an entire catalogue of more banal Christian lyrics.

It’s been three years since that album came out. Album #4 has to be somewhere in the foreseeable future, right?

I’m hoping next year. I know they are actively working on songs, so I’d bet second half of 2015.

I finally saw them in concert this fall, after 10 years of fandom, and went out for pizza with them afterwards. Very fun

Cool! I’m jealous of both the concert and the pizza! Some day I need to plan a family trip down south that coincides with a Theocracy concert. I don’t think I’ve been to a concert since my kids were born.
