I am looking for some reading material about the historical reliability of the Bible, especially the New Testament, by good Catholic Historians. Can you give me some ideas?

It’s not Catholic, sorry, but Lee Strobel’s stuff is great! The Case for Christ, The Case for a Creator, etc…
 
Pope Benedict’s book, Jesus of Nazareth would also be a good buy. The topic of the reliability of the gospels is addressed at some parts of the book. Its also a great read. 🙂

Well, what I came across is that each book has it’s own prologue and it gives you a glimpse of where the book came from and what author could have written it. So to give you a short answer: look in the bible.

Academic schools of thought abound, but they’re secular, and academic. Start by studying the history of the development of the Bible. Then study samplings of the field known as ‘form criticism’. Good foundations.

KingAlfred, what book would you suggest for the “history of the development of the Bible.”
 
Fr. John Meier’s series is an education. AFAIK, he is a Catholic scholar in good standing.

    I can second the recommendation of B16’s book, too. In fact, I think that’s where I learned about the Marginal Jew series.
