I’ve recently begun to appreciate Church history more, especially when I read Triumph: The Power and Glory of the Catholic Church. I had felt pretty devastated by the recent scandals in the Church, and reading church history helped me realize that the Church has survived the sins of her members before and assured me that she is going to make it through the present troubles. There have been some terrible times in the Church, with some really bad Catholics in leadership positions, including pope, but at the same time there have been great saints raised up by God to protect the Church from being destroyed, just as Jesus promised. I would urge all Catholics to learn more of their history.
I found that some of my understanding of the Church was being confused by what anti-Catholics were saying about the Church. My respect for and understanding of the Church has gotten stronger as I read her history.
