Greetings all. šŸ˜€

I am wanting to purchase a Catholic Hymnal so that I can sing along with online masses, as on EWTN, for example.

Is there a standard/traditional hymnal used in Catholic services ? Or does it vary from place to place ?? What would you say is the most common Catholic hymnal ?

And, what exactly is a Missal ? Is it bound together with a hymnal in one book ??

Sorry, Iā€™m new to this whole Catholic biz. šŸ˜‰

Thanks in advance !

From my personal experience, no. Usually the same collection of songs, just a different order based on the publisher. If you want to watch the Mass on EWTN, Iā€™m sure you could contact them and they would let you know which hymnal they use.

There are a few hymnal publishers in the US that most parishes would choose from, and each of those has multiple offerings, so you would need to know the choice of the place you wish to follow along with before making your purchase.

A missal (specifically, the Roman Missal) is a book that has all the prayers and readings for the Mass (and sometimes other things in the appendices as well, depending on whether youā€™re getting a personal copy, an altar copy, etc.). Youā€™ll also find ā€œmissallettesā€ that are the laypersonā€™s seasonal copy of the parts of the Missal most appropriate to the pew (rather than the priest). Those often contain a few select hymns.
