There is an interesting web site, CatholicHypnotist.com .

I had used another hypnotist who wasn’t so "Cathholic friendly, but had good results despite some of her comments.

Dear Nancy,

I was under the impression that hypnotism (when it involves willfully giving up control over your faculties) was sinful. Could you tell me how a hypnotist can be Catholic, and how a Catholic could allow someone to hypnotize him/her without sinning?

God bless,

Agricola

Popes Pius VI, IX and XII have all written favorably on hypnosis FOR THERAPEUTIC purposes. NOT for entertainment.

You can google around and find their writings.

If you do a search on the CA forums, you can find some of my earlier postings on hypnosis.

Agricola,

Hypnosis doesn’t involve giving up willful control of your faculties. People are helped to follow suggestions they want to follow. As it has been explained to me,some people like to be silly; stage hypnotists figure out who those peoplle are and help them do what they want.
Hope this helps.

One of the things I’ve always heard about hypnosis is that, even when hypnotized, you cannot be forced to do something that is against your conscience.

Let’s hope that everyone who goes to a hypnotist has a well-formed conscience then. 👍

At least when you see a hypnotist, you know how you are being influenced and why.

Here’s EWTN’s take on hypnotism. Bill Bilton appears to be a forum moderator:

Hypnotism
Question from on 08-23-2002:
What is our church’s opinion of hypnotism?
Answer by Bill Bilton on 08-27-2002:

According to Catholic principles, hypnotism is not wrong in itself, so its use under certain circumstances is permissible. But since it deprives the subject of the full use of reason and free will, a justifying cause in ncessary for allowing it to be practiced. Moreover, because hypnotism puts the subject’s will in the power of the hypnotist, certain precautions are necessary to safeguard the subject’s virtue, and to protect him or her against the danger of being guilty of any injurious actions.

Obviously, Bill has nevber been hypnotized.
I have been. When my first child was born the Dr used it so that I didn’t have any drugs. Later I used Lamaze and the only difference I found was the participation of the Dr. My Dr. said was that it was a technic for deep breathing. There was no time that I didn’t have full control of what I did or didn’t do.
