Hi all-
I’m not new here, but it’s been awhile since I posted and I totally forgot my screen name/password.

Anyway, I work for a Catholic company. More than half the employees are not Catholic. I have also been told by executive staff that while employees are expected to uphold Catholic beliefs regarding abortion and birth control, certain staff that are in fact Catholic do not even agree with the church’s teachings in these matters. Plus, it was pretty much said that if you are a supporter of abortion or Planned Parenthood, don’t associate the agency with your support, but other than that they don’t care.

I had prayed about this job going into it, and had asked God for a couple signs if this was the right place to be. So, I got a couple signs and decided to take it, but have been feeling lately that I don’t want to be there. I thought maybe I had been sent there for a reason, but really…shouldn’t a Catholic organization be, I don’t know, CATHOLIC?

Any ideas on how I can make this easier? I’ve been getting upset about this lately.
 
How long have you had the job? If you want a totally Catholic environment, you will have to become a religious and live in a convent. Or be a monk. Your profile doesn’t give a clue as to your gender or age, so realize that I’m guessing here. I’m looking for work. Trade ya places…😉

Welcome back.

If you think God led you into your job, then there’s a pretty good chance that He still wants you there. I would ask Him. Possibly you are supposed to be a witness to a true Catholic lifestyle.

I have pretty much zero knowledge of your work situation (nothing except what you have posted) and can only speak in generalities. I would be tolerant of your co-workers–tolerance being “What you are doing is wrong, but it is not my place to stop you from doing it” and being quite different from acceptance–and insist that your coworkers return the favor.

My guess also is that it’s not so much that management doesn’t care what the workers do on their own time as it is that management cannot control what the workers do on their own time. They do not own the workers, after all, and unless the worker signed a “loyalty oath” on being hired there probably isn’t much that the agency can do about it.

yeah, sorry, i just created a new name and didn’t fill out any profile info yet. i’m 26, female, just started the job last week.

i have less tolerance for these attitudes in a catholic company, esp when some comments are made directly by the CEO. (i was being vague on the specifics of what was said just in case anyone from the agency would come across these boards.) i have just had this bad feeling about the place for the last few days. that’s why i’m awake this late, just thinking about it.

i know, i have been looking for work for quite some time, but maybe jumped into this a bit too soon without thinking about it…

I can understand your concern and distress. However, you don’t know how God intends to use you in this environment. Keep praying and be open to the work God can do through you in this company. Also, keep in mind that these are still people created in the image and likeness of God. Focus on their good points to ensure a more positive atmosphere. Make sure you understand why the Church teaches what it does on abortion, contraception and other teachings that could possibly come up in conversation with them. You never know, if you give sound answers in a discussion you could impact someone’s thinking.

I work for a large company where Gay Pride week is celebrated, employee charitable donations are matched which unfortunately includes Planned Parenthood, and there are a few Catholics in my organization who see nothing wrong with abortion. How do I deal with it? I keep in mind my own faults that are many in number, pray a daily rosary and remain open to however God will use me at work. Those of us in the workforce are called to serve God just the same as missionaries in foreign lands. In fact, sometimes it can feel like we are in a foreign land. But look at it this way, God needs us in the work place. If not us, who?

The most useful place to shine light is in the darkness

I work as a contractor and have been sent to work at a tobacco company and it hasn’t been easy (plenty of times I have, and continue, to ask myself if I am doing the right thing) but being that I am working in this environment I may as well make sure people know I am Catholic and love my faith…some people have started to call me “el padre” because of it. (im originally from Mexico hence the spanish).

I understand your dilema: employment - unemployment… Chruch’s Teachings - go with the flow…

Sadly the Catholic Church engages in way too much political correctness… just a few weeks ago I caught a clip on EWTN where a bunch of clowns (transvestites) approached the altar and received Holy Communion from the presiding Bishop, who was not only “unable to determine” that these were not nuns (their outlandish makeup was representative of their parades in NYC) but did not seem to understand that a mockery of the Faith and Christ was being perpetrated! Further, the EWTN’s news commentator continued to call them by the term which these unholy persons appropriated, which suggests that they belong to a Catholic religious order!

…it is no wonder that a “Catholic” organization would promote anti-Catholic values and reject any Catholic Teachings that brings them into conflict with the world.

At least in America, it is becoming clearer and clearer that we, Catholics, must make up our minds… as Peter said, are we to listen to men or God… as we continue to become friends with the world we become enemies of the Lord (St. James 4:4).

I do not suggest that you quit your job; I caution you not alienate yourself from Christ in order to be assimilated into the environment. Remember that God can give you the strength to reject the world’s teachings!
