What is the most important modern language on Catholacism? Which ones should a native English speaker learn? I hear about Italian obviously, Spanish, French, and of course Latin, but which one should be first on the list of a Catholic looking to take on a new language? I have taken one year of latin and in highschool I took a couple years of Spanish, but what do you recommend?

Depends on what you want to do.

For academic purposes, in addition to English, French and German are very helpful.

For pastoral purposes, Spanish.

Hi, whitechocolatebear! I think that the most practical and best language to learn by a Catholic is Hebrew, Greek or Latin, since they could have been related with Jesus however, they can sounds to ancient. But in fact, any languages will do, since most of them are used for evangelizing and celebrating the Holy Mass throughout the world.

Before I can answer your question, I first need to know what are you learning it for. For example, if you want to become a theologian, then I would probably recommend Hebrew, Greek or Latin. If you want to become an evangelist, then I need to know what population you’d like to evangelise before giving you an advice.
