What exactly are you looking for? Are you asking about Catholic moral guidelines? Can you be more specific? You can start with the 10 commandments. Everything you want to know is in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

what do you have to follow, what is not allowed and what is

Dear JLRgirl,

As a Church we do have canon law (vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/_INDEX.HTM) and as mentioned by a previous poster we have the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) to help us (usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/catechism/catechism-of-the-catholic-church/epub/index.cfm).

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ approximately 2000 years ago, so it has been around a long time. We follow Jesus. We are encouraged to read the Bible, pray, attend mass, develop our faith, undertake good works with love, lead lives that are pleasing to God etc etc.

If you could narrow down your question, you will get more detailed answers from other more knowledgeable posters than me.

May God bless you

In a nutshell:Follow the ten commandments
Love God with all your heart, all your soul and love your neighbor as yourself
The sections of the Catechism starting here:vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s2.htm
will give you further insight into what these Commandments mean (e.g. the prohibitions against fornication come from the Commandment against adultery)

Maybe you’re looking for something simple? Basic? Do you mean the “man made” rules, so to speak? Or the moral rules, the Ten Commandments? As I understand, the precepts (rules) of the Catholic Church are:

-obligation to attend mass every Sunday
-confession at least once a year
-must attend Easter to receive communion
-must attend on Holy Days of Obligation
-there are some about fasting and abstinence (giving up something for Lent, maybe you’ve heard people say that?) but I’m still figuring those out.
-non Catholics can’t receive communion and any Catholic who is not in a state of grace isn’t supposed to receive either
-abortion is forbidden
-must be open to children when married (basically no contraceptive birth control)
-no sexual intercourse outside of marriage
-you can admit to having same sex attractions, but in order to be Catholic in a state of grace, you can’t act on it. So you must be celibate. I don’t know what the rules are about living together as brother or sister are, you’d have to ask someone way more knowledgeable than me on that.
-marriage is for the purpose of procreation (babies). So since naturally only man+woman =baby, marriage is for a one man one woman and once you’ve validly (that’s an important word) married someone, it’s for life, no divorce. If you do get a civil divorce, the church still sees you as married, do no dating or remarriage.
-support the Church financially and through works. There is no rule on the amount, that’s between you and God.
-you must be baptized validly

That’s all I can think of, I hope it helps a little (and these are just my understanding of the “rules” that most people mean when they ask this question 🙂

Found this in a handy guide entitled: Some Catholic Fundamentals

11) Laws of the Church:
  1. To assist at Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.
  2. To fast and to abstain on the days appointed.
  3. To confess our sins at least once a year.
  4. To receive Holy Communion during Easter time.
  5. To contribute to the support of the Church.
  6. To observe the laws of the Church concerning marriage.
Imprimatur: John J. Ward, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Los Angeles

If you ask an attorney to give you a list of the laws of the state you live in, he would point to his bookshelves and tell you to dig in, one binder or one bound volume at a time. There will be laws, regulations, building and other codes, and various policies which each citizen of your state are expected to follow. Of course, the attorney could very well offer summaries of various laws etc., or offer other shortcuts such as explaining a law or two face to face.

So, to answer your question, here are three important resources:

usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bible/index.cfm [The New American Bible, Revised Edition]

usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/catechism/catechism-of-the-catholic-church/epub/index.cfm* [The Catechism of the Catholic Church]*

vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/_INDEX.HTM [Code of Canon Law]

You can “dig in” at will. But there are shortcuts. I’m sure readers will gladly explain particular teachings of the Church concerning faith and morals, as well as explain various practices, if you can be more specific.
