Greetings all! Not sure if this is the right place…

Anyways, I’m going down to school at the University of California Irvine this upcoming fall and I was wondering if anyone had any insight on the Catholic life down there. (I will be living with some relatives in Huntington beach… they’re not Catholic, so I don’t know if they’ll know anything)

This will be my junior year in pre-medicine, I’m 20 years old and moving from Northern California (Redding) so the living will be quite a bit different! I’m a traditional and conservative Catholic and would love to attend daily mass down there. I was wondering what the churches were like also. (Huntington has 4 or 5 Catholic churches within a 5 mile radius of my residency!) Also, I was wondering if there were any young adult groups or knights of columbus groups worth checking into.

Any thoughts or (name removed by moderator)ut would be amazing! Thanks and God bless!

Contact this group:

They are a lay catholic group. With your age, you should either be in the Youth or almost with the Singles group.

They are dynamic and strong in their faith. They will make you feel at home asap.

I moved from Salinas to San Diego years ago and it is a BIG change! Much hotter down here. UC Irvine should have a Newman center that you should check out, first thing. Good Luck!

Hi Travis,

I’m attending UCI this Fall as well and my wife and I have been living in SoCal for the last 5 years. We are looking to attend St. John the Baptist in Costa Mesa. They are run by the Norbertines (You might want to check out the Norbertine Abbey of St. Michael, too) I’ve been positively edified by the number of parishes that are faithful to the Magisterium here in SoCal. I was looking online for a Newman center at UCI to no avail. Orange County does tend to have more liberal parishes than LA County where we’ve been living. I know that Archbishop Brown is up for retirement and perhaps His Holiness will continue the trend he started in L.A. I digress. I will continue to look for a reverent place to worship and post my findings here. Congratulations, by the way, on becoming an anteater!

God Bless,
Erick Custodio

There is also a good Catholic bookstore right down the street from St. John the Baptist Parish called ‘Paulist Press Book Center’. It has an excellent supply of Bibles, theology books, music, etc.

Phew, finals are over! Now I can sit back down and get back to things… lol.

Thanks for the reply! I checked out that church online and it looks like a pretty good church. And the Norbertines look pretty conservative to me. It’s definitely not the closest Catholic church in regards to my residency; but if it’s a good holy church, then it’ll be worth the drive. Any idea how Saints Simon and Jude Church is in Huntington Beach? I live 2 blocks away, and it’s definitely more convenient that way. But I suppose life isn’t always about convenience =p

Oh, and any idea if there is a perpetual adoration in the region? I tried looking one up in the local area through various parish bulletins to no avail. Many one-nighters though…

Anyways, thanks for the help! Peace and God bless!
