Catholic Musicians...Anybody there?

Hi!
I’m from Ecuador (so I speak Spanish) but I’m not really really into music in Spanish. I know about Jesed, Sister Glenda and Martin Valverde who are catholic artists in my native language but I really want to listen to Catholic music in English.
If someone could help me with this I’d be really grateful! 😉

I know that some classical music is in English, like G F Handel’s oratorio Messiah, but I’m not sure if he wrote it for Catholic Church. I also liked Purcell’s Evening Hymn.
 
What type of Catholic music would you say? Contemporary? I listen to Christian Contemporary that is mostly Catholic but not always.

One of my favorite Catholic artists is Danielle Rose. Also, Audrey Assad. Matt Maher is also good.

Kari Jobe is awesome- Christian but not Catholic.

Catholic music in English? Afraid I can’t help you much there though I quite enjoy Mass settings of all the great classical composers, from Beethoven to Mozart to Schubert to Verdi… even Bach wrote a good one! Of course these are in the language of the Church, Latin. Handel, like Bach, was a Protestant though I’m not aware of any Masses by him. That’s not to say his music is no good!

Here’s a much shorter distinctly Catholic piece, Franck’s “Panis Angelicus.”

Perhaps take a look at organ music as well.

I’d like to recommend three gospel albums to you. The first is The Staple Singers Great Day cd on Milestone. This will sound rather bold, but this cd is easily the greatest gospel album of all time. The songs will take root in your heart and your love will continue to grow for them for the rest of your life. Words can’t even even describe how heavenly and beautiful this album is. The second one I’d like to recommend is Reverend Louis Overstreet’s His Guitar, His Sons And The Congregation Of St. Luke’s Powerhouse Church Of God In Christ cd on Arhoolie. It was recorded in 1962 and is utterly fantastic from beginning to end. The third album I’d like to recommend is The Oblivians Play 9 Songs With Mr. Quintron. They’re a punk rock band from Memphis, Tennessee who recorded a gospel album in the nineties. The music is intensely powerful and utterly heartfelt and sincere. If you’re interested I could make some more recommendations, but these three are the absolute cream of the crop. At the very least, you really, really need the Great Day cd.🙂 These albums are all Christian, but not specifically Catholic.

I would give you links to the specific cds, but I don’t think we’re allowed to do that on CAF. I think it would be okay for me to recommend a music store, though. Down Home Music in El Cerrito, California is quite possibly the best music store in all of North America, and they ship internationally. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If you contact them, try to talk to an employee there named Opal; he’s super friendly and has the most encyclopedic knowledge of gospel I’ve ever encountered. I think you’d like him.

I’m afraid I’m not really into classical music. I like it, though. But you know I want something to listen while I go on bus to my classes and that at the same time give me a message to praise Our Lord. Thanks for your recommendations I will take a look also! 😃

Hahaha Thanks! I strarted laughing with “El Cerrito” 😃 Gee, seems like there’s a lot of Christian music but not much Catholic :confused: I’ll keep looking If I go to USA i’ll look for Opal then! 😃
 
I really think our brother and sisters in Christ have some powerful music ministries and their lyrics and messages in the songs they sing are often perfectly in harmony with what Catholics might hope for in music that lifts up the soul to God and praises Him.

For example, I think Laura Story and this new song is pretty good. Tell me what you think!
