A girl I know who has been catholic for her entire life (she is 35 or so) said something shocking after sunday mass. She said that she didnt care for Virgin Marys position in the Church (Dogma about Mary and the that we pray to her), she said that she is just a creature like you and me and refered to “Sola Scriptura?!” she claimed that the teaching of the vatican was in many ways wrong and that we should use the Holy Bible to make up or own mind about how we should practise Our faith.
She also mentioned how much she enjoyed to listen to some pentacostal revour that I cant quite remember the name of.

I though to myself that this is Heresy when she talked, but couldnt find the courage to say what I ment about it becouse Im New at my local Church (and I dont know her to well) and she has been Catholic since long before I was even born so it wasnt Natural for me to try to correct her.

So my question is, does her opinion qualify as Heresy? and how can I correct her if it happens again without being rude or out of Place?

Please give me some (name removed by moderator)ut on the matter, I would hate to se her leaving for some Protestatism Church or other opurtunistic movement.

Thank you for any feedback.

God Bless!

For want of a better word, the time for an intervention is now. From your reports, she has been heavily influenced by Evan, Pent. Confrontation will only push her in the wrong direction. Perhaps asking her “why do you feel that way?” Or “What does the Church teach and why do you feel that is wrong?” and hold her to giving concrete answers. She is about to “jump ship”

Make sure you also remind her that the church’s teaching about Mary comes from scripture.

The Hail Mary… pretty much all except the ‘pray for us sinners…’ is straight from scripture (luke 1).

Mary said in the Bible “All nations will call me blessed.” (luke 1)

Mary was said to be a virgin, even asking how giving birth to the messiah would be possible, since she didn’t know man. (Luke 1)

The prayers of those on earth are carried to Heaven by those already there (Revelation - don’t remember the chapter).

My two cents is that discussing sola scriptura would be a good place to start. If she believes that then you won’t have a leg to stand on in any other discussion. Perhaps point out that early church fathers had writings dating about as far back as the church itself. They addressed things which were not in the bible, and they were not immediately dismissed. You could also point out that nowhere in the bible does it preach sola scriptura. We can know for certain that if something is in the bible then it is Truth. We cannot say that something is not Truth if it is not in the bible. It is a logical fallacy. I am sure others have better things to say on this subject, and I am sorry I cannot be of more help to you.

Sounds like she is having temptations against Faith at the very least. You might ask her if she has read the Catechism of the Catholic Church? Or try to find out why she has begun to think this way. Beyond that I don’t think there is much you can do except perhaps invite her to a retreat. Since advent is just around the corner one of these might be coming up.

While the other things she says are certainly problematic, the above actually is not. While having a devotion to Mary is wonderful and very helpful it is in no way necessary for Catholics to pray to Mary. Also, she is absolutely 100% correct in saying that Mary is just a creature like you and me. And the fact that she emphasized this makes me think that her problems are not so much with the Catholic Church as with her misunderstanding of the Catholic Church. She is going to need someone to talk to about these things in a gentle and non-pushy or judgemental manner to help her start to separate her misconceptions about Catholicism from the reality of it. Now, you may or may not be the person to do this. It depends on how your relationship is, how you approach the discussion, and how she receives it, if, to her, you seem pushy, in your face, or judgemental you are likely only going to make her more upset with Catholicism. Make sure to pray for her, that is something you can do no matter what.

Yes indeed:) I can’t come up with any gentle way to talk to her becouse as mentioned in my thread this is not a girl I know to well.

I will try to pray for her as often as I can, I’ll pray specifically about Mary’s intercession for her. Praye day and night! 🙂

Thanks for all answers:)

God Bless!
