The pope lifted the excommunications of the SSPX bishops in order to make it easier for them to come back into full union with the Church if/when theological differences can be resolved. What would happen if the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches lifted their mutual excommunications? Would this be advisable? Would it have any effect at all on a possible future reunion?

Glory to Jesus Christ!

They did in the 1960s. It took a while for the schism to happen and it will probably take a while for it to be healed. I do pray for reunion everyday, though!:byzsoc:

Here is an Orthodox view on what would be necessary for the two Churches to enter into communion with each other. Of course, that is only one priest’s opinion on the matter, although there are many that share his views in Orthodoxy on the situation. I am of the opinion that our hierarchs will do a better job of sorting it out. 👍

In Christ,
Andrew

As our brother Andrew has stated this has been done. 👍

So instead of the gears of schism being in “forward” position, they are now in “neutral” and we are talking regularly. We shall try to shift that to “reverse” and roll the church back to the unity of the First Millenium.

🙂
