Douay Rheims New Testament and Psalms published by Baronius Press is ideal for carrying around in your coat pocket. It’s a faithful rendering of the Clementine Vulgate and uses Elizabethan English. Highly recommended.
If someone joins the Newman club to proselytize chances are the leaders will kindly ask them to leave. It is more likely that they are interested in learning from Catholics.Actually I just joined something called the “Newman Club” at my college. They have a Bible Study as their meetings. They are Catholic, but the only thing that worries me is that they let non Catholics in.
I’m English and I was told by my former University chaplain that proselytism was banned on campus and that I’d be in trouble if I tried to convert anybody. This is a perfect example of the cancer of false ecumenism that infects many within the Church. Jesus Christ saved me and led me to his One True Church; it would be a great sin if I didn’t try to lead souls to Jesus Christ. This life isn’t a game. Many souls go to hell because they don’t hear the Gospel truth and because people don’t pray for them. Forget ecu-maniac-ism and preach Christ in season and out of season. If someone joins the Newman club to proselytize chances are the leaders will kindly ask them to leave.
I think you missed the point. @Melodeonist was afraid to join in a Catholic Bible study at a Newman Club because they let in Protestants. My point it that the Newman Center leaders would stop someone trying to win away Catholics in the blink of an eye. It would not be allowed. Most likely, Bible studies are open to all because Catholics are not permitted to have secret societies and many young people are incredibly curious as to what the Catholic church actually teaches.Xanthippe_Voorhees:![]()

Carrying a pocket Bible around will help you spread the Good News. I’ve used my DR New Testament in the city centre when discussing scripture with the JW cult.
I totally missed the point and I’m sorry - I should’ve read more carefully. I agree with what you’ve said. I’m big on proselytism but there’s a time and a place for it. I’d never go to a protestant bible study and rudely disrupt it. I engage in proselytism when it doesn’t cause disruption or cause a scene. My method is to begin with friendly dialogue and plant seeds.I think you missed the point. @Melodeonist was afraid to join in a Catholic Bible study at a Newman Club because they let in Protestants.
What’s the difference between the two words? I’ve always seen them as synonyms.Perhaps a better term would be evangelization. Proselytism is a somewhat nasty term that insinuates you are trying to force your viewpoint on another. Evangelization speaks to spreading the word of God for His glory.
Proselytism is about forcefully impressing your viewpoint. Quite frankly “our” viewpoint has no place in conversion. We should be leaving room for God.Xanthippe_Voorhees:![]()

Thanks for explaining. They mean the same thing but the method is different.Proselytism is about forcefully impressing your viewpoint. Quite frankly “our” viewpoint has no place in conversion. We should be leaving room for God.
Evangelization is, at it’s heart, about sharing the word of God through His works. It’s not about us at all, and it’s not about forcing.
