I thought the prohibition of priests in politics came from Rome. Does a bishop have the power to waive the prohibition?

Apparently the Bishop can invoke some rare power to allow the Priest to do it. I am not certain on the details but I find it just so disgusting.

Despite Fr. Gravel’s claims to be moderate however, by opposing the legislation he falls into a minority group even among abortion supporters in Canada. An Environics poll released in October 2007 found that 72% of Canadians - 75% of women - would support “legislation making it a separate crime to injure or kill a foetus during an attack on the mother.”

He’s not even in the mainstream!! He calls it a moderate position, even though a majority of pro-choicers even agree with the legislation.

This is terrible on so many levels! :mad: :mad:
 
I has been my firm belief that when abortion has ended, it will be viewed by the world as a crime against humanity. I believe that abortion doctors will be hunted down for prosecution like those convicted of war crimes from Germany in WWII.

It seems a bit mysterious. Apparently, Fr. Gravel gave up his exercise of priestly duties for the duration of his time as a politician.

Unfortunately, I got into a rather heated argument with the late Monsignor Charles Owen Rice after reading his column that the abortion issue didn’t matter when voting. This was in the Pittsburgh Catholic in 1996 and he was touting the benefits of voting for William Jefferson Clinton. There was no e-mail back then for either of us and I may have saved Rice’s responses. But, his disregard for Catholic Doctrine was painful to read!

So, by this priest’s logic, Jesus was just a part of Mary until His birth (not God the Son Incarnate from the moment of His conception). So, not only is he dissenting from Church teaching on the abortion issue, he’s embracing heresy in a number of ways (Jesus not existing until His birth-why, exactly, do we celebrate the Annunciation? :rolleyes: , Scripture being wrong, as Elizabeth clearly recognized Christ as a separate person from Mary, it could go on and on). He needs to be called to Rome and “dealt with” 😦 .

Sorry to disagree with you Ellen. I think he needs to be laicized so he can follow his true calling; that of a Democrat politician.

A totally unsubstantiated allegation from a website on which anyone can say anything about anyone without any documentation. More importantly, even if the allegation is accurate it is irrelevant to the current discussion. The issues at hand are dire enough without muddying the discourse with personal attacks.

Actually one of the first things to do when verifying truth is to look at the trustworthiness of the person in question’s character. Happens in legal proceedings all the time.

Sadly, this man seems to have little.
