Does anyone know where to find a good Catholic psychologist? I have been having panic attacks when I travel for work lately. I have been reading scripture in the morning and praying, but think I need professional help.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Your Priest may be able to recommend someone.

I’m sorry you’re struggling right now, I hope things get better for you soon.

Your primary medical doctor may have recommendations, too. They often have at least some cursory details like this about who they refer to, because like you, patients find it important. That’s been my experience in this area, anyway. If they can give you a list of recommended psychologists or ones who accept your insurance, you could also call and simply ask. It’s as easy as, “Are you accepting new clients? Are you Catholic?”

You might want to call your local Catholic Charities agency as well. They often have resources. Good luck!

@TheLittleLady might know where to find some resources. (She is very good at that! 🙂 )

Just a nerd who retains things, trying to use my one superpower for good 😉

I would begin, as some said above, with your Diocese. Call the Catholic Charities office and ask if they have either a counseling service or a list. If you do not know how to reach your Diocese, you can find their website/contact info, first find your country and then go from there:

http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/country/

Or, call your parish office on Monday, ask the secretary for the phone number/website of your Diocese.

Your priest may know therapists who attend your parish.

There is an internet resource

Lastly, speaking for the US, most communities have a mental health service of some sort, they will have a sliding scale if you do not have insurance. A good therapist does not have to be Catholic to help you find the tools to deal with panic and anxiety. Your GP doctor is another place to look.

Don’t have any suggestions for a psychiatrist but I have panic disorder and I can suggest a book called “don’t panic” that has been a great help! They have a kindle version to. I would get a copy!

Thanks for any suggestions.
For very practical advice on coping with panic and anxiety attacks I always recommend the books of Dr. Claire Weekes. They are available on Amazon. There are some very good videos on YouTube as well. Her Australian accent is charming but a bit more difficult for some to understand. She’s not Catholic but her books saved my life. 🙂
