I need to post this…there is much misunderstanding and I feel the need to defend this wonderful gift from God…that us Catholic Rappers may have the prayer support of our brothers and sisters…

what are your thoughts…be charitable…

It is a legitimate art form and and a legitimate form of expressing Love for God.

But we should be concerned for any scandal that it might cause. The fact that most rap music celebrates drugs, violence and disrespect for women does not make it inherently evil. But because of rap music’s roots, there are some people who might be offended.

Therefore, exercise prudence. Where Catholic Rap music does good, use it. Where it causes division or leads people to commit evil avoid it.

I personally would be very reluctant to perform Catholic Rap in a parish sanctuary or in front of a parish’s reserved eucharist, again not because it is evil, but because of the potential for scandal.

I have heard Christian music that is good, and Christian music that is not so good…but it gets air time because it delivers the Christian message. Rap can be used to effectively portray the Christian message, but it always helps if it is well done. My favorite “Christian-esqe” rap song is actually out on the secular market, but delivers an undeniably pro life message “Can I live” by Nick Cannon. I also know that Father Stan Fortuna has had some success with his music, although I haven’t had a chance to really listen to him.

Keep working on good music and keep doing God’s work. I have no prob with Catholic Rap, as long as its good!

Peace be with you!

Check out the video for “Can I Live”. It’s great! Plus, this has been getting played on MTV and BET! This is by far one of the best music videos ever made. Everyone should watch it…it loads pretty fast.
