Some here have reacted in shock and dismay at the actions of Catholic authorities and their trust and faith in those authorities has been harmed. That seems to be a significant issue.

I am not aware of a Church teaching that says this is the case. It is only good manners to call someone what they ask to be called, especially in this situation. I think you are conflating that with other Church teachings on human sexuality.

“Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: Neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers:
Nor the effeminate nor liers with mankind nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor railers nor extortioners shall possess the kingdom of God.
”
And of course, an important warning from 2 Timothy
“ For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers having itching ears:
And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables.”

These verses from Romans obviously don’t apply to most gay people today. Many gay men have never been attracted to women, so how could they end up “leaving the natural use of the women”? They’ve been attracted to others of the same sex from the very beginning. And gay men I know aren’t “filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness: full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity.” That certainly doesn’t apply to me.
