On facebook, a friend of mine from NY made the following statement,
When I taught in the Catholic school, I had to give part of my salary to the church…yes, it came out of my paycheck as a required deduction.
This person has since left the Catholic Church, and the above was among a laundry list of reasons, most of which I could pastorily speak on and defend the church, but this one statement caught me as a bit odd…

I have asked for details on this statement, and await for it, but I value Catholic Answers as a resource and figured I might receive some additional insight… Is this normal for Church Staff or Teachers?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated, God Bless

Perhaps I should have used the word contribution rather than tithe… Apologies…

I sincerely doubt that story. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Don’t believe everything you hear.

I’ve asked this question more than once and cannot get a straight answer.

So to my knowledge, tithing is a good practice but is not an obligation and of itself.

Is it possible that teachers were required to be members of the parish, and you could only be seen as a ‘member’ of that parish if you tithed? I do not know how some churches track membership.

Also, did she have children going to the same (or another Catholic) school? Some schools DO require that to receive a discount for parish members, a tithe/donation to the church is required; perhaps again, that is to show membership in the parish (supporting members).

God bless you for defending the Catholic Church and Faith.

I taught in a Catholic school in NY and the only thing taken out of my pay check were state & Federal taxes and SS.
