Hello, everybody! I have to do a college assignment where I come up with a Social Entrepreneurship idea. What distinguishes Social Entrepreneurship from regular Entrepreneurship is that it is based on a cause. A couple of examples are Bombas and 4ocean. So I need to come up with an idea that can help people. I’m having trouble though, so I’m here. What problem(s) would you like to see addressed and/or do you have in your life? Thanks and God bless!

I think we need something like the YMCA again, but revised. We have lots of drug- addicted fatherless boys running around these days. Ideas for a Ymca that captures the minds of jaded young men? High-tech virtual reality simulations, free tech classes, and old vets who volunteer their time with the boys. Group projects, fundraisers, and educational trips.

Another idea, neighborhood farms. New take on the victory garden. Everyone rents their plot. Saturday farmers market.

I think it would be great if there was an app that showed volunteer opportunities in the community. Places that needed volunteers could put some kind of an ad, like how many people they need, if there’s any special requirement (like they need someone with a car or truck), and for what days and how long; then people who wanted to help could pick up assignments, like Uber where someone puts in a request for a ride and a driver can choose to accept that request. If the person doesn’t show up for the assignment, they get some kind of a negative feedback and after like 2 negatives the person can’t sign up for any more.

This would be really helpful because a lot of us would like to volunteer, but if we’re not already part of some regular charity or some group (like a school group) that gets matched to some particular opportunity by people at church or whatever, we don’t know where the opportunities are, and it can be really challenging to find where and when to go help, especially if you’re just looking to drop in and do stuff from time to time rather than be on a schedule where you go every week.

Does it have to run on money from it’s own sales and service, or can it be funded by donations and grants?

Any business could have the social aspect if it serves its employees and its community well. Fair labor, sustainable supply, etc.

Wow! These are really brilliant ideas! Although I may not actually do these ventures, I encourage you all to think about maybe pursuing these yourselves. Would definitely be major agents for good! Thanks for your help, and let’s keep it going! 😃

It has to be self-funded. Otherwise it would be non-profit, or at least to close to it. The assignment is really looking for the former.

4ocean may not be as great as they lead people to believe…

I have always wondered about corporate charitable enterprises. Like if I give money to the grocery store to feed the hungry, can they take it off their taxes or are they just a conduit?

And so on…

However, if someone had a service company, they could fund additional service; for example, if someone had a cleaning company, they could offer some hours of cleaning services to poor or elderly people for free.

Or dry cleaners offering dry cleaning to job seekers.
